water question
« on: June 25, 2017, 21:21:05 »
Can anyone tell me the least expensive way to obtain water for salt water tank?
I see gerbers sells for a dollar a gallon. Or do I try and put my filter back together and waste a bunch of water and spend money on refills for filter etc.Its just a 28 nano but want to do weekly water changes

I think Brian (Lazylivin) sells some. I just don't know how much.
We don't know how strong we are until being strong is the only choice we have.

Honestly, running your own RO/DI system will be cheapest in the long run. You can run your waste water through another RO membrane to cut down on waste water.

Another way to cut down waste is using a pressure pump in you RO system. I picked up a RODI Buddy and it works really well

But what about the cost of replacement cartridges and the salt.
For a dollar a gallon i could avoid all of that couldn't I.

For a nano, you would only replace the cart every 2 to 4 years or so, sine you only make between 10 and 30 gallons at a time. And there have been sales on salt to make it close to about 30 cents per gallon or so. And I wouldn't use distilled. Either buy or make RODI water is what I would say. But I did buy water from Lazy quite often

Why wouldn't you use distilled? Guaranteed 0 TDS.

Least expensive initially is to find a local reefer you trust and buy 5 gallons from them. Then you will also need top off water for the week, roughly 2 gallons or so. So that is $7-8 or so. If you do that every week, after a year you are up to $400 or greater. You can purchase a nice rodi unit for $160 that will get you all the water you need , but then you would have to add your salt, take care of maintenance on the unit and so forth.

It comes down to whether or not you want the hassle of driving to get your water every week, or you want your water on hand. There are several local guys I would trust. I would not, however, buy my water from anyone, or any store, that wasn't prepared to show the TDS readings of their water for you.

I like having my water on hand for when unforeseen things happen, or you just don't feel like driving to get it. Up to you though as to what you prefer.
