my 27 gallon marineland cube
« on: December 28, 2012, 08:06:02 »
Bought the tank and sump off a guy on here and im making alot of progress with getting the stand built and getting t set up!

things to do list:
I still have to paint the inside of the stand and water proof it.
---also im thinking about adding a fan on the inside of my stand to keep the air moving. i was probably going to do just a computer fan.. would that work or would i need a special one?
need a digital timed surge protector that times at least 4 outlets. Does any1 have any recommendations on a good one??
Also looking for a good skimmer that can fit in a small space! if any1 has and ideas or has one laying around let me know!!
Looking for live rock as well! preferred fiji but need anything about now.

Looking good.  The Bubble Magus Nac7 fits the sump perfect and skims great.

First water test:
Salinity - 1.025
Nitrites - 0
Nitrates - 0
pH - 8.0
Ammonia - .25

Here is the old 10gallon

Here is the new 27 gallon

Nice set-up.. FWIW, I had a JBJ nanocube 28G and ran with no skimmer just filter floss in the media basket and it did great.  Just did 4 gal water changes every 2 weeks.

Quick Update... Tank is going good! having a little brown algae growth but thats expected...

But I am not happy with my coral growth.. theres hardly any even when I had my corals in my 10gallon. Ive been trying to do some reading on dosing but I am at a total loss..

I saw the B-Ionic 2 part dosing kit and it seems like a simple kit to start with. but doing some more reading I guess i need test kits and have to keep my lvls at a certain point and know when to dose and how much. and it all seems complicated.

Can anyone help me figure this out? Ive never dosed before and dont want to start till i know everything about it

In a tank that size, with a low bioload, good consistent water changes should provide what your corals need. Remember that you just recently switched tanks and that corals take time to adjust to this. It would benefit you to test your water parameters. If you want to drop by with a water sample, I can test it for you.

Quick update..

And the diatoms are here..... I was hoping I could have a cycle with out the brown junk but nope its back..
Corals look good except my birds nest :/ its starting to bleach and im not sure why.

Got my new fixture from Marine Solutions and the colors are starting to pop. I have it about 12" above the water level
Also got my skimmer and a mini fuge in the sump. skimmer is doing great so far. its still breaking in but producing some dark skimmate.

Looks good. Is it a ponapae birdsnest? If so they like lower light unlike all the other birdsnest that like super bright light.

You can order those frag shelf on liveaquaria's website. Oh and becareful with the clam being on the rock because if they drop a few times could cause stress and unfortunately lead to death.

So it's been a few months since my last update and I thought I would do one more before I have to break the tank down an move it back to columbus. Btw I have some questions about to to transport everything. We were considering bagging everything and floating it in a 55gal trashcan that we will heat for the ride back.
Also I have a yellow watchman and pistol shrimp and want to know the best way to get them out of the tank.

Thanks!

Everything looks great, nice job. The tear down and rebuild doesn't usually go that well.

Its been quite a while since I posted an update.  I just got coals glued down and am starting to hand dose everyday.  Looking forward to the growth!!  Also looking to add a floating fuge in my sump but not sure how to do that.  Any ideas??

Here is my current sump.  Let me know if you guys/gals have some ideas to add a fuge.

It's been a while since my last update. So a lot has happened lol. My fiancé and I just moved into our first home and with that I wanted to do a complete upgrade. I am very happy so far with everything. Now just need to start saving again for corals to fill the tank!!

Also, I am wanting to add pods to my tank. Not sure what to get or if anyone has any I could buy please let me know.

Please let me know if you see anything that could be improved or have any other ideas for the setup.

Having a calcium spike don't know if I should be worried or not.

Calcium - 534ppm
All - 10.622 dkh
Phosphate - 0.00ppm
Phosphorus - 0ppb
Nitrite - .007ppm
Ph - 8.0

Is there a way to lower it or should I just keep doing water changes?

7 month update.

Tank is doing ok. Had a rough patch a few weeks ago and lost my 1 sps and almost all my zoas. Everything else is doing fine. Last Friday I did a complete clean out of the sump and did a 10gal water change.

This morning I noticed my trumpet coral dying. Pictures are below.

Here are my levels:

It would appear, by your nitrite, that you may be having a mini cycle. Possibly from cleaning too much at once...

Your trumpet is awfully close to your RBTA, are you sure it's not getting stung?
