I look over the list and see some great stores listed, my question is what do the sponsors give, do Ohio Reef members get a discount from them, I am going to be looking at some equipment in the near future and wonder if I should try some f them if they deal for the club. Mainly IceCap or things like that.

I know Joel (Aquarium ect) gives discount from time to time to worcreef members only on live stock. Im not sure about Just coral. Im sure if you talk to either of these guys im sure they could get a good price on just about anything. Its also nice to support the local guys.

We are still in the process of getting discounts, free merchandise, etc hammered out with our various sponsors. A lot of them were waiting for us to get "official". We are hoping to have specifics in place by the beginning of the year.

I hope that answers your question.

that depends... this group did it to obtain non profit status.  i doubt we will be able to get charitable status, but at least we will still be non profit and a seperate entity from a tax standpoint.  anyone can set up a website (properly and legally) and collect sponsor money and products in exchange for banner/advertising and even money for membership.  it just becomes a taxable transaction to that person.

Why could the company not just put it down as advertising and deduct it

they could and probably will either way (it doesnt matter on this end how or if they write it off).  many companies want to deal with a business entity versus an individual.  we as a group wanted to be a non profit corporation to a) seperate liability and b) have the corporation in charge of the funds versus an individual.
