3 day blackout
« on: January 15, 2017, 19:25:14 »
I'm doing a 3 day blackout, and chemiclean the last 2 days of it.

Question is, should I continue dosing during this time or not?

Thanks

Have a very small amount of gha and cyano from using vibrant (which I have stopped using).

I once cut my photo period to 6 hours to beat an algae problem.

I kept dosing without testing for a couple of weeks because my usage had been ratable.  Because there was less light for photosynthesis, my ALK increased from 10 to 15 during the period.  I hadn't thought of that. WHOOPS.  I let it fall naturally, and I did lose a couple small pieces.

Chemiclean can cause a die off of beneficial bacteria as its taking care of cyanobacteria.

Keep an eye out for a mini cycle.

Just food for thought... Good Luck!

Sounds pretty extreme for a small amount of GHA and cyano. Just my opinion.

Thanks for all the replies. I have done a 3 day black out twice before along with chemiclean. About every 5 or 6 months as regular maintenance/ clean up.

I have read and read different opinions. I'm choosing to view it as a positive thing, like a storm that blacks out the sky as it does in nature.

The tank always looks so much better afterwards.

I'm not going to dose as Humphrey stated above.

I'm also wanting to stay ahead of the gha and not wait till it's a real problem.

I have the cyano due to trying vibrant first. An after affect that many have suffered. It also killed off my chaeto which fueled the problem even more.

Thanks for all of the feedback
