I can change it Viggen, how would you recommend? Should it be Gallons x 8.35 x tank weight?


I would figure tank volume(in gallons of water) x 8.35(weight of one water gallon) + however many lbs of rock + sand. + empty tank weight. It will vary a bit.

For y 75g I will have 98 lb(empty tank weight) + 75 lb rock + 90 lb sand + water = 889.25 lbs.

This number could be greatly more, depending on how much more rock I want to add.

Mine will be nearing a 1/2 ton(lol). I have a basement. :(

I would also recommend counting in the weight of your tank stand to figure how much weight will be bearing on your floor.

good to see the notation..... I would think it depends on the type of rocks for adding or subtracting weight to the tank.  Lava rock or other light rocks would decrease weigh.  But I would think tufa (sp) & heavy/dense rocks would add weight. 
I think I know what you mean, but this could easily be confusing to some.

100 lbs of Lava rock is still 100 lbs. Which is = to 100 lbs of Fiji rock. Most when adding rock to a tank will add rock by the lb & not so much by the space it takes up.

So, if you have a less dense rock, yes it will still take the same amount of space per sq inch. But it is still the same mass. (that being 1 lb of rock 'A' = 1 lb or rock 'b', but they will be different size(in surface area) rocks.)

I would say roughly 8.35-8.55lbs per gallon of water... When adding rock into the equation I would say it is safe to subtract the total rock/sand's mass(weight) from the equivalent water's(mass or weight) to determine the remaining gallons left to add to the weight. Obviously this would not be 100% accurate but since the Live rock does not displace more water then it weighs(hince why it sinks) we can atleast start at that number for a better estimate.

So a 90 gallon tank would still weigh around 912lbs full w/ 90lbs of live rock vs a 90 gallon tank with just water.(@8.35lbs per gallon)

yessir, I would imagine special ruling would need to be drawn up for your setting as the wood with all those layers prolly weighs more than an equivalent sized sheet of glass, as well as the stand to support such a mammoth.... it sure would be fun though to get drunk and see which supports we can kick out without bringing the whole tank down... rofl like a drunk dumb marine version of jenga... as long as i didnt have to clean up the mess aswell.

The only way this would really apply is if the rock was super dense... however all live rock isn't which is why it is valued for its very porous surfaces(though there are differences in density amongst the different aquaria rock, I dont think you will find a case where it would be a substantial difference.)   

A small very dense rock could add substantial weight to the tank(though we don't use them)

A very large rock with low to proportionate weight would displace more water leading to less water in the tank(less water weight) thus the tank would weigh less overall than compared to the same poundage rock in a few very small compacted dense rock... The smaller rock would take up less volume allowing the tank to hold more water, so the tank would weigh more overall.

I don't think you will find a suitable rock that will displace more water than it weighs as it would float and not sink... so it is very safe to say the rock we use weighs more than it displaces. and though it can weigh more than it's equivalent in water weight its safe to round it at 8-9lbs of live rock for every gallon of salt water +/- a slight percentage for large surfaced or denser rock.
