How long for Ich to infect tank
« on: January 23, 2017, 10:43:18 »
Hello,
I have a tank with 4 fish. One of which is a new addition that I added on Saturday and noticed yesterday has white spots all over. How long will it take for this to spread to others? I would like to try and get the fish out if possible, but may need to purchase a trap.

If not, thinking of just letting it run and hopefully the fish can fight it off.

Thanks

If you see the ich on the fish, it's more than likely already made its way into the tank. The only options from here are to take all fish out and put them in quarantine while the tank sits fallow for 6 weeks. Or, you can just let it run its course and see what happens.

Best way to fight ich in the tank is proper nutrition. Make sure to feed the fish well, and maybe infuse the food with Selcon to give the fish some vital vitamins and minerals.

That is perfect! He uses only top quality ingredients, plus Selcon.

Oh, that is great news. I also have a yellow tang, thinking I should feed him some seaweed, any recommendations?

Lazy's Ocean Gumbo has lots of Nori in it, but buying some and putting it on a clip to supplement is a great idea also.

Thanks for the advice, greatly appreciated. I only feed a small amount of Gumbo a day, less than a dime size. I may increase this some, hard to tell how much to feed.

The way i determine how much to feed is from testing Nitrate and Phosphate. I feed as much as I can without affecting those levels. However, I do have lots of coral. If your tank is coral free, then you don't have to worry about N&P.

Just as a reference, I maintain Nitrate anywhere from 1ppm to 10ppm and Phosphate anywhere from 0.00ppm to 0.1ppm.

Just telling you from my personal experience I tried to let it run it's corse in my tank and I lost my powered blue. So right now I have all my fish out of the tank getting treated in my sick tanks. They will not be in my main display until the end of February. So please learn from my dumb a** and I would get all of your fish out and start to treat them asap. But this is just my 2 cents take it or leave it that's up to you.
We don't know how strong we are until being strong is the only choice we have.

If you get it out quick enough you may be okay, If you leave it in then it is most likely that it will spread to more fish. Each event possibly getting worse. It really depends on the strain of the parasite you got. My anecdotal hypothesis is that some strains don't reproduce very fast and fish can develop immunities where other strains can completely take over a tank and fish in a month or two.

Yeah, looks like some mixed reviews. I am going to monitor the situation day to day. Right now, everyone seems to be doing well, eating and not scratching.

Nice Tank.

I'm in Beavercreek and i have a 15 gallon tank with a sponge filter (we could pull a sponge from my display to seed it) + hang on back filter + heater/lid I'm not using-- you could borrow it you decide to pull them.  I could live without it for 90 days.

Also, I think Petco has their $/gallon sale for a couple more days (until January 28th)... you could put together a QT/Med tank pretty cheap.

You might find your new fish got the ich form the tank (and your current residents are immune at low levels), so it might self resolve.  if it's Ich you might see it again in about 3 days.

Does your spotted fish have any dark spots, and does it look dusty or more like salt, hiding from light, swimming in place facing a powerhead?  Just watch for these signs of velvet.

Wow, I really appreciate the offer and advice. I will keep an eye on everything and let you know. Right now the "salt" on the fish (purple pseudo) have disappeared, so I will see if it they show back up.
