looking to use some type of tile to grow out different types of coral. does anyone have any suggestions for what type of tile to get? how to know whether it is water safe or not? etc?
ill even take a link to what/where you buy yours from.

Josh, great question - I do not hear about this topic a lot. I have seen on R2R where they talk of 'unglazed' tiles and they make mention of a Porcelain - Terracotta or ceramic tile? Keep us posted.

Have used Ocean Wonders ceramic before, works well.

Steve agree, Again to me the ceramic type seems more logical - most of the frag plugs we use are made of this. I just ordered a bag of plugs from Ocean Wonders and on the risky side is Terracotta - reason: where does the clay source come from, more risk prone? I have no data for Terracotta just kind of a gut feeling.

Matt's coral in Columbus uses tile. Any type of tile that isn't glazed is a good choice. Glazed just makes it hard to get a good bond.

3x3 tiles seem like a good size - those are $15
going to go to home depot today to see if i can find something that reads as being unglazed. some of the other stuff i saw cautioned against different color types of tile bc of the chemicals used possibly leeching into the water. i've sent messages on fb to a number of online retailers and havent had any clear responses.

I have bought just plain old wall tile and cut it into 4 squares and mounted the coral onto the back side of the tile. Never had any problems that I know of.

picked up some home depot 4x4 tiles for .08 each. soaked them for a week in old tank water. excited to use them

Wow do you think you spent too much? :) I go the same route when I mount acans, blasto, and even my gonipora. I tried some old tumbled marble tiles once that I had left over
but Lazy told be they would be very hard to cut with a frag saw and to just use the cheapo ceramic tiles.

The thinner the tile the better. The ceramic and marble tiles will dull a blade pretty quick. It isn't an issue if growing sticks because usually only cutting off a branch rather then tile. I can make some for you if you like. You may also find that a flat tile for the base/encrusting grow out of acros:
1.) affects flow in tank and in and around coral
2.) takes up way to much room. Kind of like a montipora does.
3.) holds detritus
4) dull and warp blades

i've tried cutting through some different types of liverock with my saw and the manmade rocks are very difficult to cut through on top of generally being thicker than what a tile would be. getting the rock down to the size and shape to actually frag has been a challenge for me.
Guess it could be a dull blade too. I got my saw used so i dont really have a reference point for sharp vs dull blades to go on
