Hey all! I have started a new build thread on R2R.  I’m not going to do 2 and try to keep up, so for those of you on R2R, enjoy.

I will still stay on here and post and ask questions as always.

Stand is assembled!  I have some Panduit arriving this week to layout all the wires for the controllers and stuff.  This week will be all out installing the equipment and keeping it neat and accessible. I will post up pics as it progresses.

Over the weekend I ran 2, 15 amp GFI circuits for all the equipment.

I'm really enjoying this build and upgrade!

Nice looking stand Mike.  I would be worried if those are hardwood floors.  Spills always happen.   :alas:

Hi Kelly,
the whole house is hardwood except for the 2 bedrooms. definitely not ideal. good thing is that this RedSea stand is on a bunch of feet which has about 1/2" opening under the stand.

I also bout a 5" long foam mat to roll out in front of the tank when I will work on it.

Also plenty of towels on hand!

I am going to use NYOS reef cement to mortar the base rock together in sections, then put the sections in the tank.

Not sure if i'm going to mortar, epoxy stick, or just place the shelf rock.

Thanks Kelly, YES, lots of places for corals.

I also wanted lots of caves and swim throughs for the fish.

I will post my anticipated stocking list below.

PS......on of the tonga terraces will be a zoa terrace.........how is your frag tank stocked for zoa's?!

for stocking, it will be a mixed reef.
top left side will be taller SPS, right side large plate on top will be tabling SPS...................NO ACRO's

Plates will be used as "gardens"
acans, chalices, ricordia, zoa's / palys.

also a euphlyyia secion, softie throughout.

I personally love small fish, so while this list seems big, I basically focused on sections of the tank:
top
middle
rocks and caves
bottom

azure damsel / chromis   7
carberryi anthias   5
 wrasse   5
purple firefish   2
oscellaris clown   2  ?
tailspot blenny   1
royal gramma   3
goby   5

Many will be purchased in groups or pairs from DD

There are 10 swim throughs in the scape.

The blue tape is a 3" space all around from the inside of the tank walls to allow for cleaning

Ok. Concrete work done to hold large sections of the base together. I will have a 1 - 1 1/2 inch sand bed.

This is the final scape!

Co workers from Dayton will be down here this week and are coming over for dinner and a tank lifting event!

Hi Rick. Well, I wanted to secure the large pieces of base rock. I’m going to have 5-6 gobies. At least 1 pair with a pistol shrimp if not 2. So I wanted a very secure base sitting on the bottom that won’t fall over.

The Tonga plates are just stacked and I am not planning on permanently attaching them to each other. They have a big footprint and have some weight to them.

I watched a bunch of videos on different cements. The NYOS is pricey, but it mixes easy and fast. You must be prepared and know which piece you are doing next as it sets solid in 2 minutes as advertised.

There are some bad reviews on this stuff. But the good ones and the good videos make it clear that you must mix a perfect 3:1 ratio. 3 parts cement to 1 part water. If you follow that it works perfectly every time.

I used a small dose cap from a NyQuil bottle. It has a 15 and 30 ml dosage lines.

I used 45:15 every time. You end up with a little smaller than a golf ball size.

Then you must quickly press it into the spot you want. Obviously you can’t make it paper thin for large rocks. Rather multiple spots that are thick and small.

I recommend watching the YouTube videos as well.

I think one can makes about 10-12 at the mix I used

Please ask any questions!

No lights till the weekend. I will be adding fish and lights then.
I will be putting in 3 royal gramma, 3 azure damsels, 3 zebra barred dartfish, and 1 tailspot blenny. All small size.

Then after a couple weeks with fish and lights it will be about time to add a properly sized CUC.

Then, I will be awaiting Keith92 to take vacation and haul my corals down!

Keith!  It’s in the 70’s down here this week!

Actually put 13 fish in the tank over the last week. Most are 1” or less. I would say I have 17” of fish I the tank now and doing well so far.

3 azure damsels
3 royal gramma
2 ocellaris clown
1 orange spotted shrimp goby
1 tailspot blenny
1 blue green chromis
2 purple firefish

No more will be added for a month or so.

Keith and his wife are making a trip down in a couple weeks and bringing my coral he was kind enough to hold for me while I moved.

Next group of fish will be 4 carberryi anthias.
And a melanarus wrasse

It will interesting to hear how your azure damsels do. I’ve heard they are a less aggressive damsel. I have a bunch of the springeri and they are great. You ever had the azure’s, and how are they so far?

Well..... day 3. Never had one but also read a lot that they were the least aggressive. This time around I have a 30 gallon sump, so.....

Thanks Gary. I will be sure to post when I harvest. It’s easy to see thru the top to know when it’s full.

I started with a tennis ball size of chaeto. Broke it into 2 pcs and put a piece on each level.

Thanks!  I love the fish as much if not more than the coral. The azure damsels are great actually. By doing 3 or more, they won’t kill each other, and it allows them to focus on each other vs the other fish. There are zero issues with aggression.

Eatbreakfast on R2R helped me a lot to get variety and compatibility.

It’s so mellow that my purple firefish and royal gramma cruise the whole tank.

The red head Solon fairy wrasse is king of the tank. He will chase the zebra darts at feeding time a bit, but no nipping.

Just added this 5” derasa Saturday night.

So far I am liking them. I control them thru the ICV6 wifi module ($45) on my ipad or phone.  Much easier to program via the app.

Growing my softies and LPS well so far.

Some SPS frags were put in a week ago so the jury is still out.

The Deresa clam on the bottom has been happy for a month.

I'm watching the SPS closely!

Oh, and it grows hair algae as well! :)

Looking great Mike. Do the Wheelers ever interact or do they just tolerate each other?  I’ve always loved those little booger’s, and I had heard they could be kept together...  just didn’t know if they ever have a spat?

Hi Jim,

these are my first pair of wheelers. got them off of DD as a bonded pair with a candy cane pistol shrimp.

ive had them about 6 months now.

definitely a male and a female, as you can tell by size and color.

the female typically stays on the front left of the tank with the pistol shrimp. The male typically stays middle to right side of the tank.

They get together a couple times a day and stay side by side. and every few weeks they go thru their spawning ritual.

I call them Mr and Mrs Smith! They have pretty cool personalities and are very curious.

If you wanted a pair, I would definitely buy them as a pair after they have been sexed, like from DD.

Male

Female

Mr and Mrs Smith

all with my iPhone 8

these last natural light ones were taken with the stock phone camera. Phone flat against the glass.

For all my prior photos, same phone but pics taken thru the "aquarium cam" app. Gel filter on, adjustments as needed in the white balance.

I think it’s well worth it. All the other pics and videos in this thread were made with that app. I’ve got better with it over time but I’m no expert.

Main things I’ve learned is:

Gel filter on.

Then go to white balance and play with the 3 settings to get the look you want.

A few pics with the app:

Sorry to hear that Mike, they are a great fish add but man I have heard of few success stories with them. They are a zero stress fish, do not handle it well. If it picks that wrong spot at night to camp out, maybe was getting picked on that way?
