Help I cannot bring my nitrates up.
« on: January 14, 2019, 20:04:47 »
I have been dosing brightwells neonitro for 3 months now and cannot get the nitrates up to  3ppm let alone 5.  I cannot imagine that my corals are up taking that much.   Ive reduced the cheato to the size of a baseball  only run carbon 3 hours a day just to keep the water fresh in the reactor.   and feed a lot.  I feed a lot.   frozen mysis, calm eggs,  spectrum pellets each once a day.  10 fish in a 75gallon.  multiple test kits and typical result is less than 1pp.
What am i missing any suggestion will help.

You could try dosing aminos.

Dose more. You should be able to bring it up to the desired amount in one day by dosing the amount required to do so. The stuff is pretty weak so it takes a lot. That is why I started making my own for customers. I have it back in stock prepping for opening day. if you need a bottle I got you covered.

Brian, I will throw some money at that when you are back up and running.  Is neonitro garbage then?  I do  the math formula on the bottle and re test 24 hours later with no change?

I was think about carbon dosing to keep po4 down while I ramp up the feeding.   Thoughts?

So Are you adding 75ml to your 75g and not seeing 5ppm?  I’m interested to see what your phosphate is at too.

Nothing wrong with neo nitro it is just weak solution so it takes more. Test water 5 minutes after you dose it. My system at one time consumed 1.7 ppm nitrates per day if I recall correctly. The more coral you have the more it will consume. Clams eat them up pretty good as well. Testing your nitrates 5 min after dosing will determine how strong the solution is. Then testing 24 hours later will determine the consumption rate.

Have you tried stump remover? It’s cheap and does a good job.

But some potassium nitrate or calcium nitrate from Green Leaf Aquatics. It’s $3 for a 1lb bag and it’s designed for aquariums

Thanks All I will test ~5min after dosing and  see if I'm actually bringing the levels up.
joelbegt: My po4 tends to stay at .02-.04 range.

Since the topic has been raised, what is the ideal NO3 range for SPS. I’ve now got the 40B stable at .04 & 1. This is what it’s testing right before I feed, daily.

update: I have tested 2 minutes after doing.  and the nyos kit is reading 5ppm  I will test agian before dosing.  I was using the easy dose calculation:  gallon X desired increase X  .3785=  dose.   this comes out to 14ml for a .5 increase?   I read the instructions all the way through and at the bottom it say 1ml will raise 1 gallon 1.5 ml.  so 120ml dose later the tank is reading .5 finally  and im an idiot.

Interesting, my bottle says 1ml will raise nitrate in 1 gallon 5ppm.  I figure if I keep it easy by shooting for 5ppm. it takes 65ml in my 65 gallon system volume to go from 0 to 5

Yeah there is a conspiracy about brightwell debuting the formula the newer bottles are half as potent and there neophos has changed two!

I started dosing potassium nitrate, and it has worked wonders. You can mix your own concentration based on your needs.

Decided to give this a try since my nitrates have been zero for a couple months and I’ve noticed corals are not looking as healthy.
Using Green Leaf Aquariums Potassium Nitrate and this formula

I went from 0 to 5 nitrates after waiting 5 minutes to test. Awesome.

Next up is to test for consumption.

I have been able to get my nitrates up 5ppm  with neonitro but it took 75 ml to get there. Lazy was right.  that is a lot more than i was dosing using their EZ calculator @ 12ml.  will look for another option if the nitrates start to drop.
I have started dosing acropower and continuing to feed more in an effort to keep it up.
