Oct. Meeting
« on: September 08, 2009, 13:07:27 »
I'm thinking of October 17 or 18th for the meeting in October.  I'm planning on doing some acrylic demos.   I just need to know which day and time is better for everyone, since I am north of most of you.

The Meeting will be Sunday the 18th at 2:00pm

Address is

424 Cornell Dr.
Lima, Oh 45805

Dinner will be provided plans of now are Chili and hot dogs for the kids (or adults if you prefer) we will also be providing pop.  You are not required to bring anything but if you want that is fine as well.  You will want to bring some sort chair, I have some but sure we will need more.  Also depending on weather I would suggest dressing warm as my garage has no heat.

Anytime after 12 noon on either day is fine for us, I'll let majority rule here.

nikki and i have been over to loni's place for his expertise on acric.. it was worth every minute of the drive. he is a master of acric and we learned a ton. If you want to learn how to build your own sump or a photo box, or any other project you have in the back of your mind you should come to this meeting

Well according to the poll it looks like Sunday the 18th it is.  I'm thinking 2pm till??????  I forgot to mention, kids and spouses are welcome I have a 10 yr old girl and a 6yr old boy.  If you want adult beverages you have to provide them.  Now all I need is a head count so I know how much food to make.  Also what kind of things do you guys want to learn about acrylic?

I've been trollin the forums here for a number of months now. I have been interested in checkin out some meetings but I work weekends this time of the year. I happen to be off work on the day of the October meeting, plus Lima is close to me.
What is the proper protocol for 1st timers? Just show up or is there a sign up section I'm overlooking? Is there a secret knock, or code word, I need to be aware of to gain entry?

Lonnie (Blown76mav) is a big Michigan fan so if you show in with Ohio State apparel on, you may not get in unless you know the secret code, which is 2132 as of today (ie, the number of days since Michigan’s last victory over Ohio State in football).

I apparently haven’t had enough coffee this morning... I don’t see how you would get the siphon started with this design.. We had a similar overflow but it had a tube, not a channel like this one. Every time we needed to create the siphon (initial set up and after each cleaning) we had to first fill the tube with water, put a couple of pieces of saran wrap on each end, flip it the right way round, put it in the overflow box and take the saran wrap off under the water... so how would it work on this guy? Anyone ever use this design?

Thanks for humoring me this morning

Hey Will... I had a very similar overflow for a while.  This one is similar to the CPR style, which uses an aqualifter pump to start/maintain the siphon.  There's a small nipple at top of the black section where the pump is connected.  You fill the tank side of the overflow box with water, start the pump, and it pulls the water up the tank side of the overflow and starts/maintains the siphon.  The one that I had did not come with the pump attachment so to get mine started, you would insert a section of airline tubing into the unit from the tank side, up and over the bend at the top, fill the tank side of the overflow box with water, and suck on the other end of the airline tube until you pulled water up and over the top portion of the box.  A little hard to explain, but it works.

Hope it helped.

Now... get some coffee.

 i had the same problem at first too.  I was trying to find out how the hell to get water up in the u-tube.  The way i do it now is I run a piece of airline up into the u-tube and suck out the air, thus the water rises and you have a siphon.

I do this same thing, but I'm with Nikki, no tank water in my mouth. I use a 20ml syringe to draw the air out, the crimp the airline, push the syringe in and draw out more air. Works pretty well...

After being in this hobby...then going scuba diving, I had a seriously hard time letting water near my mouth (hated removing the respirator or mask underwater for scuba...NOT cool.)  Too many little creatures in the water that scare me.  Ewwwww.  Sorry...there was my rant.

Man, all the SEC love I would have thought we were down south, not in Ohio.

Bring one of those teams up here in late Nov. or early Dec. and see if they're as fast in the snow or cold weather as they are when in the much warmer weather. I'll take The Ohio State University against any SEC team (except Florida) in the snow or cold sleet/rain game.
