My new little Eco-system :)
« on: January 31, 2009, 16:31:08 »
Hey All ! Just wanted to start posting a few pics of my attempt to go from a Fish Only tank (yes i do use live rock in that tank as well, but only as a bio medium ) to a mini reef.

This is Day 1 on Dec. 24 2008 (above)

This is a badly out of focus side shot. After a little more than a month and a few trips to Aquariums Ect. (BIG PLUG !) ( I have yet to me you Joel )

The first fish I plan to add will be a Yellow Clown Goby. Anyone have any exp with these little guys? I must admit though, that I am becoming quit inthralled with the Zoanthids.

Clown gobies are cool, but they will eat small shrimp & can irritate (if not eat) SPS corals.

I have a yellow clown goby at my parents house with their tank. Very cool little fish and very easy to keep.
If you didn't know I'm kind of a big deal...

I have some green clown gobies.  I like them because they remind me of the Ultimate Warrior from when I was growing up.  One of which hosts my biggest acro in the tank.  I have always heard that they are known for eating polyps off of acro's, but I have also heard that they eat anything that may land in the crevices of the acro.  So far, though only a couple weeks, my acro isn't missing any polyps when the goby lives.  He is sweet there though cause he is good sized and he just pops out in between the branches.

Worthwhile plug: I got my gobies from Joel.  They are great!  Biggest I have seen at a LFS!!  Props to Joel! ;D

Re: My new little Eco-system :) Tank Update 7/29/2009
« Reply #4 on: July 29, 2009, 17:31:45 »
Just though I would update a little

a little while back due to a crack in the 10g tank I was forced  ;D to upgrade to a 26g bowfront. I was fortunate that the 10g had been preforming great.
I added more live rock (still not done, but I am being picky about the rock).
I got bored and made a little in-tank refugium.
Added a Hydor Koralia 1 Circulation Pump as well as upgrading the lighting to a Current USA 65W SmartPaq Compact Fluorescent (half 460nm Actinic, half 10K).
also I have added a AquaticLife Internal Mini Protein Skimmer 115. I will let you know how this skimmer works out after I see it running for a month more. As of now I am real happy with it.

I am thinking of adding another Current USA 65W SmartPaq Compact Fluorescent with 420nm tube to increase my blues as they seem a little washed out.

My bio load is:

1 gold stripe maroon clown (very small 1.5")
1 royal gramma (1.5")
6 Blue leg hermit
2 red leg hermit
1 ball sponge
2 zoa
1 new torch coral
1 new frogspawn

that's it for now  :cya

Thank you for the nice comments however I hope it looks a little better now.

Before: this is the NEW 26g just after setup. Sometime in mid July

It came with a new Aqueon 30 filter (worked great to filter out the new sand particles clouding the water :)  ). I must admit, it is one of the best HOB filters I have used in a while. After this picture it was put to use on the wifes fresh water tank.

After a trip to Joels big "Moving the Business Sale" :)  I decided it was time to add a little aquascaping to my sparse setup. After hours of drilling, gluing and cutting acrylic rods, this is now what I have ended up with:

I know its all bright white and everything, But I am sure time will correct that problem

OK....here are a few other pic I just wanted to throw in...

What a great job aqua-scaping. It is hard to believe that is the same tank. Looks like a real reef.  Did you get any pictures you can share of the glass rod and gluing process?

Thanks ! and no I didnt get any pics with this one because I thought about it too late  :'( and since this was my second attempt at anything like this ( my first is the little structure in the first pic) I was afraid it would explode / disintegrate or something.

The funny part is, most of the work went into the structure on the bottom that is covered with sand. I created a lattice support structure where sand could fill up all the many voids. That way my little pistol shrimp could tunnel to his little content and not topple the whole thing  ;D.

I also designed it so I could leave my existing rock work (what little there was) in place behind the new stuff.

And after all of that, I can still clean 360 degrees with my mag float with out hitting any live rock !!

Thanks everyone for the nice comments.

So far so good. We've added a few things so I thought I would try to keep this thread up to date.

First up is the newly purchased Court Jester Goby. They are also know as the Rainfords Goby I have been told. However since my call sign on all the game boards has been Jester for many years, I am sticking with the former name  ;D

For anyone wanting info on where I got this great little fish please use this link : http://www.ohioreef.com/index.php?topic=6944.0

Pic Update

Just wanted to keep this updated with a few pics.

I have made a few trips to various sponsors and members over the past few weeks. I have tried to make at least 1 purchase from all of our sponcers.

The ric pics that you see below are of the 3 ricordias that I purchased from Marine Solutions. GREAT place and close :) I am now thinking of picking up a HOB Skimmer from them.

Coral ranch and Lazylivin provided most of the zoas pictured. Coral ranch .... what can I say.... probably the most dangerous place I can go with my wallet

Coral Ranch also provided the Sun Coral

-----------------------------------------------------------

MICRO ZOAS

This red mushroom was my first coral given to me by Reef'd Up (THANKS SO MUCH)

OK...done for now

Those are all great pics; All very pretty.

Looking good,  I think my watchman goby is one of my favorite fish unlike the clowns he doesn't attack my hand every time it enters the water.  I agree with you on taking pictures, I never had problem with CF bulbs but as soon as I went with the MH lights my pictures turned from bad to horrible.  I need to get your cooler back to you some day kenn.

After fighting a battle with Bryopsis and coming out ahead, I had a casualty as a result.

I lost one of my favorite fish today ... my court jester goby  :'(

I completely believe that the  lost was due to the "deforestation" of the Bryopsis crop. IMO these fish NEED hair algae in their diet (foraging). Up untill I started to rid the tank of the hair algae pest, this fish wasn't only surviving...he was flourishing ! FAT and HAPPY.

Sadly due to the fact that I dont plan to have another crop of Bryopsis growing in my tank, I will not get another of these fantastic fish.

Good Bye Jester !! You will be missed.

Just wanted to add a little info to this tanks profile :)

After getting completely frustrated with the BH300f Octopus skimmer on this tank I pulled it and placed a spare Sea Clone 100 on it while I had decided to combat a outbreak of byopisis hair algae by doing a blackout of the tank.

The old skimmer went out to the work bench and got broken down. It stayed in this condition for a little over 6 weeks due to weddings and sadly a death in the family.

After 6 months of declining performance the problems were many...

  • bad \ if any foam production
  • tons of micro-bubbles
  • one of the pumps kept shutting down on me

basically I had a dead weight hanging on my tank and not a skimmer. I also (IMO) believe that it helped contribute to the massive explosion of byopisis hair algae.

So late yesterday evening, I had a DUH moment and went to the Reef Central site and found a few threads on this "hard to get info on skimmer". After spending hours reading every post I could find, here are the threads BTW for anyone else who might be in need of info on these skimmers.

http://www.reefcentral.org/forums/showthread.php?s=d05d854a784b5618bd0e09173b5e9765&t=1325349

http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1271452

Feeling better educated no only on this skimmer but skimmers in general I headed to the workbench at 10:00 pm and preceded to clean, do a little mod here and there and replace the air tubing.

Here is a stock pic of this beast:

FYI: it is powered by 2 resun 225 which are known to have heat issues.

I had everything put back together by 1:30am  So today I pulled the trusty little Sea Clone (good little un-moded skimmer BTW) and reinstalled the BH300f and after just 2 hours of operation I must say I am STUNED  :o !

I am already getting foam production. It has NEVER done this well  ;D

Upon reading the post on RC I have learned I have a little treasure of a skimmer.

It's only failing ... A inexperienced operator

I...Being a newbie to skimmers, had decided to purchase a high-end-knowledge-is-a-must skimmer, and just expected it to work. And when it didn't. I of course blamed the POS skimmer. When in fact the problem wasn't the skimmer.

It was me.

Lesson Learned...maybe  ;D

Well ...after much frustration trying to post with a embedded video  :banghead

Here is the link instead to get you an idea on how the skimmer operates

Thanks !

I forgot to mention that this video was taken 22 hours after the skimmer was completely cleaned and vinegar soaked.

So as a "newbie" to complex skimmers... I am very happy so far :)

As of today I have turned out the lights and drained the water on this build.

This was certainly quite a ride.

I had been out of salt water set-ups for around 10 years. This was my wading pool for trying to see if I was truly ready to get back into this hobby.

In hind sight, I now know that a sump-less system is possible, but a monster to maintain with all the temp swings and parameter fluctuations.

It has been a great learning experience. And I must say it would have been a impossibility for me without all the help and support of W.O.R.C. members and our sponsors.
I have decided to strip the 26g and incorporate it into a combination display/grow out tank with our existing 37g set up.. This adds the benefit of a sump and having a place to grow out some frags of Zoa/paly  as well as LPS/softies.

I do however have a soft spot for this system. It was purchased as a Birthday gift from my family and has gone a long way in lifting my mental spirits.

If you wish to follow my continued attempts of successfully  keeping a salt water aquarium, please join me in the following link:
