180 Gallon Starphire tank Upgrade + Fish Room
« on: April 18, 2011, 20:17:12 »
Ok, this weekend officially kicks off the insanity.   Relocated the washer and dryer to make room for my fish room...

180 Gallon 3 sided Starphire Display tank
75 Gallon Sump
75 Gallon Frag Tank
2 x 40 Gallon Breeders.  1 for Fish Q-tine, and 1 for Coral and invert Q-tine.
Fragging Bench and Cabinets for storage.
Walling everything off, too keep the installation cleaner looking.

I have a 100gallon Rubbermaid stock tank coming (Largest that will fit past the basement door)  to be my temporary tank during the build........Temp tank inspired by LazyLivin, just not planning on it taking a year.

Open Space for Fish Room.......Of course I haven't cleaned up yet.

Pulling up a seat this is going to get good.

Now that's what I am talking about. Nothing stands in the way of the true reefer.

I sure hope it won't take a year, your clothes will really smell by then.

The fun started a couple of weeks ago, when I discussed the plan with my wife.........hmmm where can I put the washer and dryer.   I guess we'll have to clean the storage shelves out.    Other than that, it didn't take much convincing.

I expect nothing less than top notch work from you Paul!
75G Mixed Reef w/ 30G sump/refuge

Electrical Engineers do it on impulse, with faster rise times, with more power, and less resistance at higher frequencies, without shorts, until it Hertz

Quick Conceptual Layout.   Was going to do this in Google Sketchup......that would be too much like work though.  I think I'll stick to simple 2D and plans in my head :hmmmm:

For those who have seen my current in wall tank.  I will be doing more of a cabinet built into the wall.  With my 90 gallon tank, not having front access to the tank was a bit of a pain.   So I will have front access in this tank.

Decided to order Rock from http://www.marcorocks.com Going with all dry rock, so I'm going to get some of this rock cycling soon.   Not going to re-use the old rock...... unless I a soak it in acid and bake it out.

Marco Rocks are from old dead reefs that have long been dry.   This is all dead coral skeleton that is well erroded.   This is quite poreous and open rock.   I also ordered some of their rock cut flat, to sit against the bottom.  That will solve my bare bottom tank.   Here are some photos.

One of the larger pieces.....between 8" and 10" in diameter

Flat Cut Rock

This is how it is shipped.

Brian,
any diamond coated blade would work to saw the the rock. like a tile blade or concrete blade. if u had a rock of much size you could probably
try a brick & block retail business. they usually have a fairly large saw set up for sawing limestone to custom sizes. also a granite & marble place
might have a saw also. i personally could saw thru about 6" rock with my saws. but i am an hour or so north of most every one.

Cutting slices of small live rock like bread would make great frag plugs.

Since 2004.  The DSB is that old too.   But I've had my share of sand diggers, so they kept it stirred up.    That pink Hammer in the lower left of the tank is one of the first corals that I bought in 2004 from Phishy, when he operated out of his house.   I had about killed it, was a single polyp the size of a pencil eraser........finally figured out how to maintain a reef tank, was able to grow it back.

If you ever accidentally break a head off that pink hammer coral let me know. I have a love for Euphyllia corals :)

What fun.   Everything transferred to the temp tank.   I know my serpent star lost a leg in the battle...... not sure, think it got trapped under a rock.   All fish and such accounted for.  Although i'm worried about the Royal Gramma, when I caught him and got him in his new home, he had his mouth flared and all of his fins stretched.......just floating in the current.   Either he was playing dead, or I gave him a  heart attack.  I was able to move him out of the current so he was able to get some cover.

Tank Nearly empty

Tank out in the garage

New Home for a few weeks.  I need to get the skimmer moved yet, then get a light fixture up.   I left the frag tank up......but I'm going to need to move it, I'll probably just plumb it back into the temp tank pump.
