Skimz macro algae reactor
« on: July 02, 2018, 11:02:25 »
If anyone ever happens to consider an algae reactor, here is my latest experience.

As I want to keep everything under my tank, and space is limited, I decided to try an algae reactor.

It is a Skimz MBR127. it is recommended for 1 cube of mysis per day and the equivalent amount of waste, in conjunction with a skimmer and typical filtration.

I currently have 20 fish (all 4" an under, no tangs) and feed them 2x per day. first feeding is pellets at 1:30, 1 turn of an Eheim, tiny pellets, and in the evening a homemade mix of fresh live oysters, clams, and mussels plus frozen mysis, all soaked in selcon.

so, I feed them well and it shows. Running a 12 lights on schedule, this reactor has helped maintain my nitrates and phosphates very steady over the past 5 weeks (ever since I upped lights on from 8 to 12 hours)

here is how I seeded the reactor, and then the results after 48 days. I will see what it is in 30 days next time as I don't want it to get this full and compacted next time.

It costs HOW much?!

Do you recommend this particular reactor? I’m in the market for one.

It’s the first and only one I have used.

I can say it is built like a tank. It is solid and quality materials.

It is easy to set up and easy to clean and reinstall.

So I would definitely recommend it.

Please let me know if you have any questions or would like pics.

Mike

For the past 9 weeks, my phosphates and nitrates have held with no fluctuations. Reactor has been on 10 weeks.

I feed the same every day and measure Sunday evenings.

So between the reactor and skimmer, they take care of business.

Or I should say they take care of the fishes business!

Thanks Mike. I found someone locally who is selling the same skimmer. I'll give it a try!

Excellent!  FWIW, I run the pump on speed #4 when I first seed it. Then every couple weeks as I see growth I turn it up a notch to keep decent flow as it fill in.

Feel free to ask any questions once u get it.

Happy Reefing!

Yes, we are having a great time. Best snorkeling of my life. I’ll be making a YouTube video when we get home. The footage really doesn’t do it justice though!
