AV99 Coral Pics
« on: April 06, 2019, 14:47:20 »

Aquavista99,

I got 4 really nice frags from you out at the IndMas Frag swap recently - Sky Parade, Blue Demon, Purple Plasma and Raptor. Could you post a picture of each so that I can ID the frags better? I believe I know two of them but the other two frags look similar?

  Thanks Rick

Let me dig them up for you if I can find where I saved them.  The Raptor is over the top nice too. I took a few new pictures of various corals I am growing out recently as well. May need to take some new pictures of some of the frags you requested.  :) The fuzzy Reef Hero Blue Demon that you received from me is a favorite too.

Lightning in a bottle is a nice piece Tim.  If you dont mind when you come up with a new av99 coral are they corals that you have imported and grow out to see what it blossoms into?  For instance your orange crush has been a great coral that is offered by quite a few people now. How did you get and grow out that coral?  Always wondered where the corals come from when the different collectors grow out to sell.

Thanks for the compliment, Jeff. The Orange Crush was a local find many years ago. It came from Joel at Aquariums Etc back in 2005 or so (ie, from an Indo shipment he received). Back then, you could buy a colony for the price of a frag today. Over time, the Acropora Florida coral I purchased many years ago turned into something special.  I don't import corals, just a hardcore hobbyist with a passion for the sticks going back well over a decade now.

My AV99 Orange Crush mother colony  - photographed top-down in 2011 if I recall  ;)

Jason Fox has amazing tastes in corals. If you visit his website, and click on "about," does the featured coral in the background look familiar?  I am pretty sure I know where that coral originated from!  ;)  I have some of Jason's  gems too, like the Homewrecker, Jolt, Fox Flame, Crazy Fox and others...

Hey maybe one day you will be the next Jason Fox :)

Blast from the past. My Reef Raft Canada Gold Stick arrived from the first and only release in 2012. When we moved to our new house in 2013, it was one of a few survivors but went dormant for almost 5 years until recently.

First picture is the original RRC Gold Stick mother colony

thanks for not blue lighting your pics.  I hate to get on r2r and see all the people drooling over corals that have unreal coloration that you dont see under any normal lighting.  Then try and make a fortune off sales.  Ive been drawn down that route and wont again.  (our common buddy crt is bad for that)  Really weird how a coral will not grow for what seems like an eternity then all the sudden start to grow.

Behind the scenes....AV99's grow-out system. Local SPS hardcore collector for well over a decade. I will post pictures of my dream display tank soon. It's almost complete after many years in the making with total water volume  exceeding 1,000 gallons when complete (display is 600g custom on-sight Reef Savvy build).

AV99's grow-out system (its very old school but works for me).

By invite I was able to meet with Tim and check out his collection. All I can say is WOW!  Per the pics below, Tim really took care of me. Filled my whole frag rack and half of another at more than reasonable prices. Colonies so big I had to frag them up. Unbelievable colors under my hybrid T5/LED’s. Can’t wait to see how these things do.
Thanks Tim!!

And the thing is, it looks good all day long! I ramp LEDs and then knock them down a bit when the T5’s come on for a few hours and then ramp down LEDs in the evening to straight actinic. The other corals look good in certain combinations but this WD is beautiful in ALL the combos. I love it!

AV99 is the real deal. I got my first frag from him at the IndyMAS swap and was thoroughly impressed. Going from his MH to my T5/LED set up had me a little concerned, but it took a very short time for my frag to return to looking as good as the day I bought it. A testament to the health of his corals!

Thanks Tim!

PS I still need a Matt V Rainbow from you!

Today I came home with 5 new frags that I picked up from Tim.  As always his corals are the best. If you ever get the chance to go shopping with him jump at it.  Not many corals that he does not have.  Had to climb a 25ft ladder to get them but that is another story :)

Agreed. Its a difficult coral to photoraph for me as well.

Quite the collection! I have trouble taking a photo of the jolt, it’s so blue, it’s hard to believe the color in the picture is acute but it is.

Thank you Jesse. Yes, the newest round of pictures were photographed under Hamilton 20K 400 watt Halides. Trying to adjust white balance is a challenge for me under blue light.

As for coral color, its an optical illusion. To the naked eye, the same corals look different under daylight lights versus blue lights. I prefer daylight as that is the way I see the corals on shallow reefs in the wild. When you put them under blue light without making adjustments for white balance, they look crazy Lol.

Here is a recent picture under heavy blues ... Its a smaller colony of my RRC Pretty in Pink  ::) Just having fun with this image.

Nice Tim! Are these pics under the new bulbs? You got some nice color going on.

Even my blue corals look better under blue lights. AV99 Blue Thunder and Oregon Tort shine under the Hamilton 20k lights.

Thank you for nice compliment!  I have made some progress on my big tank as well. Goal is to move coral and fish over soon ... its the slowest big tank build ever.

great pics! "coral envy", is that a treatable condition? is there a cream? lol

Everything you see PVC wise is now complete. Still not complete but getting close to the finish line.
