Title: 65 rimless reef
Post by: joelbegt on April 14, 2019, 22:52:57
My setup seems to be finally getting over the ugly stage so I thought I would share a few pictures

A bit late but I went to my first MACNA and picked up quite a few pieces including an awesome yellow tip elegance, a bunch of montis, a few zoas, and a rainbow trachy

Very nice! I really like the white bottom - I take it no sand?

I suppose reefing wouldn’t be reefing without some challenges....

The wife was out of town for work a couple weeks ago for a couple weeks so I neglected the tank a bit while dealing with the kids solo.  After she got home I went downstairs the next evening to clean things up a bit and noticed quite a few of my montis looking bad.  Took a few frags out to inspect and found the bottom of one coated in monti eating nudis.  I’ve dipped everything I’ve put in but I must have missed an egg while inspecting.

The combination of montis dieing and loosing my tang before all this has led to some slightly elevated nutrients and algae growth.  I’ve had around a dozen of these whitish green tube things grow out of some of the liverock and I’ve never seen these before.

Anyone know what these are?   EDIT. Neomeris annulata  I really hope this doesn’t take over

And a full tank shot for fun

The first thread google pulled up shows this calcerous algae as a menace. Taking this guys tanks over, with pictures. I’d be cautious of letting it stay.

I saw that too but also saw more that it came and went without incident than a hazard

Unfortunately one has spread off the original rock onto the side of my clam.  I’m going to lower nutrients and see if they go away naturally but I’m not planning to let it go too much further.  I counted 11 total tonight.

On a more positive note I decided to hook up my 2 part dosing setup and am working on dialing it in with some daily testing this week.

I had an small initial spike but the dosing pumps seem dialed in now.  I got 141ppm alk yesterday and 140ppm today.  I think I might run closer to 125ppm if I can.  I also got bored and made some tiny frags so I can track growth and try different spots for lighting/flow.

It’s been a bit since I’ve updated, but the system has gone through some ups and downs and a move to a new spot until the basement gets finished up.  The main issue I had was super pale colors and I couldn’t ever seem to get a either a nitrate or a phosphate reading.  I got to the point where I was dumping in nitrates and phosphates and could keep things stable.  I took a step back and decided to get back to the KISS method.  Ordered a bunch of small fish, and since that point I’ve still had very low nitrates and phosphates but colors came back even quicker than I thought possible.

I recently reset it and don?t have updated pictures but I will work on getting some.

It?s been 3 years of ups and downs since my last post.  Back and forth between no nutrients with dinoflagellates and no nutrients with algae.  It?s been hard to get a nice balance.  Also had a top off float valve stick shut on vacation and lost quite a bit as my sump ran dry enough that the display got cold.  I was looking back through my phone pictures from April and it bounced back better than I anticipated it would.

Things I changed with the reset were as follows:
-added sandbed
-less rock
-more sps focused
-switch to a bacterial driven system
-much whiter bulb combo more natural look

I plan to add a  Zeolite reactor more to feed corals mulm, not to strip nutrients. Unfortunately haven?t found a reactor design I like yet so might build one.

Here is a picture from April before I reset the aquarium.

Here are a few pictures from today.  I looked over my notes and I reset it July 29th and it hasn't filled in yet, but I like how much more flow I have using smaller rock structures.
