Thats terrible... Hopefully as a society of hobbiest we can use this to take more precautions when dealing with our tanks.

Its even more sad that it got his family.. I hope they all recover and I wish them the best of luck

I had no idea these where even toxic. Seems the more beauty something has the more dangerous it is. Hope everyone makes a full recovery.

I don't like zoas and palys anyway - ugly fungi in my eyes.  I pray that Tommy pulls thru OK, and this is yet another reason I don't want these near my tank.
90g SPS and LPS reef tank, 35g sump, ceramic rock by The Alternative Reef, Neptune Apex w 2 X EB8's, Moonlight module, ATI Sunpower Dimmable 8 X 39W T5's, Octopus Extreme 160 skimmer, PM Kalkwasser Reactor, 2 X Vortech MP40's, Geo 618 Ca reactor

Various thriving montipora, acropora, stylopora, wellsophyllia, blastomussa, hammer, anchor, and frogspawn, lobophyllia, rhizotrychus, pavona, scroll, and pagoda SPS and LPS corals, but no fish because I was too stupid to QT...

Oh my goodness!  Prayers to all of them.  I have messed with mine several times and felt "funny" afterwards but never put 2 and 2 together.  Now I wonder...

There has been others that have experienced similar symptoms Micki. A general not feeling well that goes away after a few hours. One guy I read on R2R gets depressed feeling after messing with zoa's. Sounds strange but you never know. It could I guess absorb some through the skin.

I'm sure some things transfer through your skin.   It also will probably affect certain people differently.    When it comes to Zoa and Polys,  make sure you protect your Eyes/Nose/Mouth, and no open wounds.

Brian, I get that I just don't feel good/right feelng and sometimes dizziness and shaky.  Almost like I might be getting the flu feeling but it goes away by morning. I never really thought about it until now. I never cover my face either. Looks like its time to re-evaluate!

Amazon.com has some good deals on nitrile gloves and disposable face shields. A little prevention is cheap compared to the potential consequences.

Hey all!!

I am actually I am from Lakewood oh by Cleveland but my friend fromLEAR, Kreeger wrote this for me on my 2nd day in hospital and I was unable to type.

I am glad this has spread so much , just wish I hadn't used real name. Lol

He wrote my story exactly as happened. I was aware of palytoxin and just like the folks who do not believe me, have worked with zoa's-palys many times with no protection. In hobby over 20 years. I have always used gloves after serpentman from csea got a bad infection on fingers a few years back. Had on gloves and eye protection this time, didn't protect lungs.

Thanks to the well wishers on this site. Nobody trashed me here, lol!!!!

I am in the process of documenting event and corals are being tested to scientifically document.

Sorry for typo's, Old man on I pod. To hard to fix!

Believe it

Peace
Tommy

You are very right Brian....Palytoxin is able to be absorbed through the skin.

There are several medical recorded deaths of dermal absorbtion of the toxin. It really is some nasty stuff.

I actually have an attachment that was sent to me by a couple of gentleman from the CDC and FDA. Thru were contacted by the doctor while I was in the hospital and are going to do genetic testing and test for the paly toxin to document this case as a paly poisoning. This will help others in the future who are hospitalized as there is very little accurate and documented info out there.

When I figure out how to share these I will try to get them to all of the clubs that have posted my story.

Maybe the non-believers also take heed.

Peace tommy

This is a LOUD & CLEAR warning for so many of us that do not take precautions when reaching into our reef.

OUR hearts and Prayers go out to Tommy & family in their time of need.

Thanks to you Lazy for posting this important and overlooked lack of precaution we are guilty of.

God is great for sparing one of our fellow reefers. I have a story...... Years ago I was fragging some Zoe's and like a dummy after I had cut my palys I took the razor and to hold it I put it between my teeth....... Needless to say you could not understand what I was saying for about 4 hours my mouth was numb and paralyzed.... But this is not about me..... I will keep him in my prayers.
A Indonesian fisherman once stated if we blow up the coral reef we have no future...... But if we do not we no way to feed my family now...... How sad the circumstances are today that ruin the opportunity of the future!

Wow... I had zoa's and paly's in my last tank several years ago and have some zoa's now.  I have never heard of this at all... I only wear gloves when I have an open cut, but never thought of taking other precautions!  Wow, I will have to take a serious look at protective measures for myself and my kids who love feeding the fish!!
