Purple Algae growing all over
« on: September 08, 2015, 15:48:35 »
Okay, this looks like purple hair algae. It is growing on some of the rocks and on some of my corals skeletons. Can anyone tell me what it is and what I can do to get rid of it?

Looks like cyano to me. If it is there are multiple options to treat it.

If it is growing in one spot, you can just increase flow in that area.  Cyano doesn't like to grow in areas that water is moving.

Byod's Chemiclean works well too.  Just make sure you have a lot of extra aeration, as the chemical process can reduce the oxygen in the water.

Is this my best option?  Also with this chemical be more dangerous to my tank since I have a 30gal nano with a 10gal sump?

Follow the directions.   I also leave my skimmer running to keep the oxygen exchange up......just adjust the skimmer so it doesn't remove anything.....  which may be difficult.   So you can just let the cup overflow back into the sump.

Turning isn't as important as oxygen exchange.  So put it along the surface to keep the top of the water agitated......in the sump is fine, unless it is already choppy in there.
