In the house we’re building, I had them rough in an outlet for our portable generator. Not as nice as a whole house generator but I can have power back up within a couple minutes.

Let me know if you have any electrical questions or need any help in your new home. I’m a manager at one of the largest electrical contractors in the area.

I put a 220 outlet in my garage and set it up so i can backfeed with my bigger generator if need be. I know its not technically safebl but i do it correctly and can run everything but our electric furnace from it.

There are ways to make it safe. My panel has an interlock with the main breaker so you can’t have the generator breaker on and the main breaker on at the same time. You should also install a receptacle like the one below to plug into. The biggest downfall would be not knowing when your normal power is back on.

Yeah i turn off main breaker and all other breakers and backfeed through dryer breaker. Not knowing when power on is annoying but i can usually look at neighbors houses. Its nice not to worry about tanks and stuff when power goes out as long as i am home
