Title: Gary's 180 tank build
Post by: Gary on October 12, 2016, 15:50:09
To all,
I'm in the process of setting up a 180 gallon (2'x2'x6') tank. It has four 1" bulkhead fittings the bottom. I'm assuming 2 returns and 2 drains. What size pump should I be running for the refugium return? I would also be interested in what others have used, successfully or not?
Thanks,
Gary

I have a 180 with dual overflows. I run to eheim 5000 pumps and it works great. I use 2 instead of 1 big pump in case of pump failure I have a backup always running. Hope info helps

Thanks. How big are your overflow pipes?  Do you have the pump throttled back? Those pumps can move a serious amount of water!

it's 1.5" pvc in my overflows that have a reducer to 1" coming from bottom of tank to the sump. I use clear hose instead of pvc for plumping underneath. I run both pumps full throttle !! Yes they move a ton of water, which I believe keeps my tank crystal clear. I'm religious about changing filter socks.

I use two Quiet One 4000's. Rock solid, quiet and affordable.

jbanion,
The tank looks really nice and clear too! I was concerned that the pair of 1" down pipes would not be large enough. That is a lot of water movement and I was thinking it would be disturbing.
Thanks for sharing,
Gary

Steve,
Those pumps are reasonably priced! I may just give those a try. By the time I replace the impeller in a Mag 7, I'm 2/3 of the way to a new Quiet One 4000 with better performance and I assume quieter. The water flow through the sump must be really fast. I'm not sure my two 1" down pipes can keep up with the flow and water fall in the sump may get loud?
Thanks,
Gary

Gary,
Your 1" pipes should return around 1000gph each in full siphon.  Maybe use one 2200 and one 4000 for a total of 1616gph.
