1 of a kind? Blue Birdsnest
« on: May 16, 2018, 17:06:12 »
Sharing a blue birdsnest coral. The parent is a standard ORA green birdsnest. It spawned in my system a couple years ago and the offspring are blue instead of green. In the picture are clones/frags from parent and the larger blue one is spawned off-spring from parent. I guess it had the blue pigment in the DNA?

That is pretty. Amazing how corals can change colors like that. Are you keeping it under high or lower par Brian?

I think the reason why it does look like bop in pics is because the blue polyps contrast the green skin. On the green Birdsnest it also has the same green skin but it’s not noticeable because of the green polyps. Aside from the blue polyps it is identical to the green birdsnest.

ORA contacted me today after seeing my facebook post on this coral. They asked if I would send them some of the Blue Zing. They said it could have spawned and fertilized with gametes from another birdnest creating a new strain. Anyway I will send them some and hopefully here back in a few months with their thoughts.

That is impressive! Your water parameters must be better than nature! The rest of us are just trying to get corals to survive. You certainly have a great talent for this hobby. You are truly one of the best, if not the BEST!

That's pretty cool.  Interesting to see what they determine.

Wow brain that will be totally awesome. Should be named Lazy’s blue zing then if it’s a new species.

Brain that's absolutely awesome! That's a keeper show piece coral for sure. Man how cool to propagate your own strain of coral!

I love blue corals, expecially SPS as there doesn't seem to be a ton of them! are you planning on fragging?

It looks like an ORA Bird of Paradise to me. What are the differentiating characteristics of your spawn vs. the BOP?

The main difference between bop, green birdsnest and blue zing is color of polyps. Other then that they are fairly similar. The green birdsnest grows tight branches, bop has a bit longer branches and blue zing is somewhere in between.
Here is a pic with all three in same pic. Bop are in front, easy to overlook

Oh ya. That’s a very clear difference when you see them side by side. Very cool!
