Any advise to pair maroon clowns?
« on: January 08, 2019, 20:36:49 »
Let me start this off by saying this is my second pair. These buggers are mean. They fight til the death. But they are so pretty that I’m determined to get it done. At all expense. Now that’s over with, any input would be appreciated. I currently have them in a same tank and the normal chasing occurs but nothing head to head lock on fight yet. I’m monitoring closely.

I’m not sure what you could do in the current situation. Starting with one small and one large has worked best for me for peacefully pairing regular clowns.

I read about starting with 1 big and 1 small. But I also heard how that also doesn’t work also. Now my biggest fear is that if I did that, the small one might not have any chance if the big one decide to go for blood...

Everything I have read on the subject suggests pairing two that are drastically different in size. I purchased a Lightning and a normal Maroon about a year ago with the intention of pairing them, but gave up within a week because the we beating each other up.

As Miles said, I have always read to have either two pretty small ones that you know are juveniles or if you have a large one then get a significantly smaller one. The larger ones are usually females so you want an unsexed juvenile to pair with it.

having paired 100's of clownfish I would agree with everything said here. One large and one small, younger the better.

They can be very aggressive. I had a mated pair, switched them to a new tank and the female almost killed the male. Wouldn't share the anemone in the new tank. Had to buy the male his own anemone and eventually the female accepted him back. Beautiful, but mean.
