Grym's 90
« on: February 15, 2017, 12:51:32 »
So I am finally upgrading in the near future, so decided I would list out what's going in it.

90 gallon corner overflow tank, stand and canopy (painted)
Mag9 return
Bubble magnus skimmer
40 gallon custom sump with 10g top off section
Brightwell NO3 xport block
80lbs live sand
Unknown dry rock
2x AI Hydra 26 HD
2x 250w heaters

And I will be moving the livestock and the apex from the 20 into this one.

Will post pics as I get things together.

Jordan

Upgrade!!!!  Love the depth on the 90 corners. Keith has his rock scraped cool with kind of a cove in the middle.

Whoops I see now the overflow is in the corner.

Well to remain positive, the corner overflows are better I think as the back walls are kind of in the way in the 90's.

Stand and canopy mostly completed. Needs some touch ups and light sanding and need to finish painting doors.

So I cemented everything as it was dry fitted from the dealer, and it seems I have two small drip leaks in some of my joins. Any ideas on how to "patch leaks". I was thinking of looking for plumbers putty or just using caulk, but open to suggestions.

And yes, I know, I just found out that the bulkheads are upside down. Debating now on just patch, or start cutting and hope I have spare bulkheads.

Is the water coming from the 90 degree elbow or the bulkhead above it? I find it hard to believe that the 90 is leaking if you cemented it since these aren't high pressure lines. I've run plumbing uncemented (accidentally) for a couple of years before it started to leak on me. If it is indeed the 90, the best fix would be to cut it off and start over (which may mean getting a new bulkhead). I've tried waterproof epoxy to stop a bulkhead leak once and it did nothing but make a mess that was really hard to get off later when I finally replaced the bulkhead. You may be able to get by with using some silicone to seal it or maybe possibly using some PVC cement and putting it all around the connection.... but honestly I would do it right and completely replace it.

Just noticed your comment about the bulkheads being upside down...  I'm not entirely sure what you mean, but I agree that something doesn't look quite right... the flange and the seal go on the inside of the tank and the nut goes on the outside (which is what it looks like you did). Maybe you just have a strange brand of bulk head that looks slightly different?

So both leaks appear to be between the bulk heads and the elbows. Possibly top of both elbows. Bulkheads are not leaking that I can tell.

I have a 1" slip x slip and a 3/4" slip sump side and threaded inside tank. Also have 3/4 threaded to slip fitting. You can have them if you're in a lurch and have to cut it out to redo.

I know I have spare bulk heads, just don't know what size/connections they have.

Unfortunately your bulk heads are in upside down. Most tanks i see are assembled the same way and folks dont realize it until it is time to take the tank down. When you unscrew the nut on the bulkhead there is no way to take the bulkhead out because you cant pull the pvc through the hole in the bottom of tank. It requires you to cut the plumbing in place to disassemble the tank. It is also tough to move a tank with a bulkhead sticking out the bottom. The bulkhead should go up through the bottom of tank and in tank stand pipes can by dry fit. To disassemble all you have to do is pull out the stand pipes, unscrew bulkhead and all plumbing comes out.

The leaks in plumbing may be due to not chamfering (de-buring) the cut edge

So are you saying the nut should be on the inside?

With this tank/overflow configuration, yes.
