Tank Status
« on: September 06, 2011, 12:52:53 »
Well the tank seemed to fair OK over the long weekend, the toadstool, a few yellow polyps and a couple of red/purple mushrooms are OK.  I put an eggcrate over the top at the request of Mrs. Mosley cause kids kept sticking their little paws in the tank.

Parameters from this morning taken with my Salifert kits.

PH 8.1
Phospate 0
Nitrates 90-100 (yes those are zeroes)

A water change is called for on Thursday, I plan on doing 15-20 gallons.  I am coordinating with Mrs. Mosley to get in the room at about 6:30AM.

I am also going to bring is some chaeto to put in the overflow that really isn't an overflow right now as there is no sump/fuge.

Nitrates 90-100 (yes those are zeroes)

This is expected as the ammonia breaks down in to trites, and the trites break down into trates.... just suck em out with a water change, and if they continue to rise then we should worry(especially with no live creatures in the tank).... Should also be noted the decrease % in nitrate count is going to be directly linked to the WC % ... If possible a couple of heavy water changes of 40-50% may be more beneficial for the first few...

Let me know if I can assist with anything Todd, I will generally be up in that area on M/W/F around 6ish pm... You have my number send me a shout if you need a hand, I would be glad to help and I wouldn't mind seeing it either

That would be great especially once that parameters come down and we can coordinate getting some critters into the tank.  This week sucks for me as I am really busy.  Check with Brian and see what he comes up with.

When I picked up the kids today, I had a few extra minutes, I threw some chaeto (thin and thick) into the overflow.  I am doing a 20+ gallon water change tomorrow morning (6:30) along with changing out the media in the Fluval 305.

Then next week do a water test...  The kids are itching for fish, but I tell them 'have patience young Padawans'.

So far tank looks good, did not test water.  I did a 20 gallon water change and put new media (Floss, Charcoal, Nitrate/Phosphate media) in the Fluval 305.  Some surface green algae growth on the PVC overflow pipes and on the inside bottom of the overflow glass.  Corals look good, a few astrea snails are alive, and I saw a few asterina starfish that had moved while I was there.

OK Tank Status Monday September 12, 2011.  Apparently the 50% water change and dual Chaeto treatment over the past 4 days seems to be working so far.

Nitrite=0
Ammonia=0
Nitrate=5 (down from about 90-100)
PH=8.2
Phosphate=0

I believe we are safe enough to add some clean up crew.  I am going to take in my Engineer Gobi as the kids will think that is way cool, that and get some of the substrate turning.

Anyone have fish or other critters to donate before I purchase some with our gift certificates to Gerbers?  If no one else gives up any fish or other critters, I will also donate my Tomini tang (of course he would most likely be close to last to go into the tank as they are very territorial.

Either that or as part of the build I will auction off (to have additional funds as currently donations are scarce <hint, hint>) my:

Tomini Tang

Short Nose Hawkfish

Neon Dottyback

Make offers, remember this is not for my personal financial gain, it is for funds for the school.

Todd,

I think it is a great idea.  However it is a lot of work initially.  We are also having difficulty in getting donations for the tank.  There is quite a bit of calling, and writing involved so far too.  Basically I have taken one of my tanks/equipment and put into the room.  Currently we have $150 for Gerbers, $25 to Coral Ranch along with the promise of livestock donations, and a promise of coral donations from Aquatic Specialist.  A few members have also stated that they will be donating equipment as soon as they are able to.   I think Brian is looking at an LED light from possibly us (Ohio Reef).

For Thursday September 15th

Nitrite=0
Ammonia=0
Nitrate=2
PH=8.2
Phosphate=0

Well I am going to go to Coral Ranch tomorrow hopefully around 1:00 PM.  The tank has stabilized pretty well.  I think starting with well established live rock, 50% existing water, and well seeded live sand helped it to stabilize quickly.

I'll see what they offer up, and I will use the $25.00 gift certificate.  The tank really needs a clean up crew.

They are facinated by it.  Mrs. Mosley told me yesterday that most kids crowded around it trying to get a glimpse of the engineer goby that I put in on Tuesday.  When it was acclimating a few kids came in the room early and were amazed at how it could swim backwards.

As part of the Ohio Reef charter for doing this project, my son drew a picture of the fish on the whiteboard and I listed its scientific name Pholidichthys leucotaenia.  I then put up 4 extra credit questions for them.
1.  What are the 2 common names of this organism?
2.  Where is this organism found in the world?
3.  What is the coloration of a juvenile?
4.  Is it an eel?

Many, many, many, thanks to Coral Ranch for their extremely generous donation today.  See pics below.  Bethel now has a blood shrimp, 3 'Nemos', about 18 hermits, around a dozen snails, and a unique fluorescent Kenya tree coral that was touted to "grow like mad".

The best part is that when I got to the school today, classes had just dismissed and an eight grader was in to get help understanding the latest lesson.  Mrs Mosley took her over and asked her about Arthropods and to point one out.  Mrs. Mosley then used the blood shrimp, that I had just brought in, to educate her about Arthropods...  Doesn't get any better than that!!!

Once again, I have to say this is the best project the club has taken on!  Thanks Todd!!  It would be great to see the club gradually branch out to lots of local school.  Awesome to promote the hobby.  Before I got my tank, I honestly had never seen a saltwater tank except at large aquariums.  Its great to plant the seed of saltwater obsession when they are young :)

Monday October 10, 2011

1.025
79 degrees
PH 8.0
Nitrate 1
Phosphate 0

I did a 18 gallon water change
New GFO in Fluval
New Carbon in Fluval
Floss in Fluval,

Cleaned out some surface algae and a bit of green hair, and vacuumed out some crud that had accumilated under the chaeto in the Caflo overflow (not in service yet)

Rinsed Chaeto out and picked out parts that had some hair algae growing on it

Moved Plug strip to up on wall

Now that I know that the water parameters are OK I can move the Red Flame Algae (put into overflow so the Tomi Tang won't eat it) the Hammer, Blue Xenia, Tyree Ponapae, and ORA Pink Birdnest into the tank that Brian donated.

Please advise on placement of the 2 SPS

Todd
