Fishfreaks 220 reef
« on: November 10, 2018, 18:59:57 »
Hey guys. Figured I would start a profile on the new tank I've been working on. Its currently been setup for almost a year so things are becoming much more stable. The goal of this tank is to be mostly an sps and gorgonian tank.
Here are the specs on the tank.
-220 duel overflows
-75 gallon sump, Reef Octo Elite 200INT Cone skimmer, Vario-8 return pump
-Growing chaeto for nutrient reduction (Lighting over the chaeto is a Kessil H380 and a cheap LED panel from Amazon)
-Flow within the tank is 2 Vortech MP40's and 2 Maxspect XF250 (Planning to add 2-3 more powerheads soon)
-Lighting on the tank consist of 3 Radion XR30 G4 Pro and 8 T5's (4x Coral Plus, 4x Blue Plus)
The tank started with sand however I could not have the flow I was looking for so it has since been removed.
The tank gets weekly 40 gallon water changes with Tropic Marin Pro Reef salt (Hoping to automate this soon with my Apex)

I’m glad to see you doing a build thread Tyler. The pictures don’t even do your system justice. It’s going to be a great display. Good job!

Are your fish getting sun burnt with your lighting?  Looks great

Update time! So I’ve decided to go aquaforest method instead of triton. Got some sps frags this weekend so I’m hoping for the best! Also will be adding 2 more mp40s and then 2 reef octo pulse 4 this week.

Got the 4 new power heads in place. Everything is looking good. That puts me at 170% turnover with just the pumps within the tank not including the return.

After almost 10 years of use out of my 4 stage RO unit I decided it was time for an upgrade. Ran an RO line all the way to the other side of the house for easy filling of the trash can by the aquarium.

Update time. Been having some issues with the tank over the past 6 or so months. Everything seems to be stable again and corals have stopped dying. Other than battling with some hair algae & bubble algae things are starting to look much better.

Tank looks amazing, I didn’t go very far back in the history of your post, but I assume you have been doing this for a while.... what’s your secret to success? Water changes? Testing daily? Dosing? Just curious because my tank has went downhill after owning it a little over a year.

Thanks! I’ve been in the hobby about 15 years. This has definitely been my most successful tank though. It did have its struggles in the beginning. I think just keeping it simple and lots of flow has been the key.
Weekly:
Clean Skimmer
Change filter sock

Bi-weekly:
Fill aquaforest 3 part
40 gallon water change
Test Alk

Such an awesome looking tank. I cannot tell, are most of the SPS colonies new purchases or are they growth from the pics of your tank from September 2019. If it is the later, that is some insane growth. Either way congrats on a beautiful tank
