Octopus........I think this is a Ohio Reef first, very cool. Will you buy a new one every 6 month's or going to try and breed it or is it just a one time thing?

From what I read I may get a year out of it. I'll see how this one goes first. It's eating LRS. So I don't have to worry about that.

How many days until it gets loose in the house?

It won't get out. At least I hope not.

Thanks guys. I read an artical that said to use a red light over their tank. That they can't see the red light. So I'm working on trying to turn the light red. I haven't been able to find red bulbs that fit the biocube. So I'm working on alternatives.

He's been hanging out in the back of the cube today.

I'm thinking any red ambient light would work. I've been looking at red led strip lights. I could wire them straight to the cubes existing LEDs, I think.

That may be better than my idea. This is what I was thinking.

Not sure if it will actually light up the tank though. What do you want for yours?

You can't beat that price......and they are water proof.   You don't want alot of light.......just think of the octopus displays at the aquarium........you can barely see a thing.

And put a snack outside the tank......and see how secure your tank is.

lol I'll pass. I worry about that a lot. I'm pretty sure it's tight enough.  At least I hope so.

First off, congrats on the new addition! I have a tank up and running and will be getting my first octo tomorrow...CAN'T WAIT!

You should checkout TONMO.com, it's a great resource for information regarding keeping cephs. There are multiple threads with tidbits on lighting, feeding, tank setups, etc. I have found it very helpful when setting up my system and preparing for my octo's arrival.

In regards to the red lighting, from what I have read, it's not necessary. Most of the octo tanks I have seen have normal lighting, maybe not super high powered, but normal nonetheless. I have set up my tank with a powerglo flourescent bulb (http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=3816) and have some blue LEDs, similar to what you're getting, coming in the mail. I plan on keeping a few other things in my tank so I want a good viewing light. There is a good list on TONMO of what can be kept in an octo tank safely and what should not be kept (http://www.tonmo.com/community/threads/tankmates-what-works-and-what-doesnt.12603/). So far I have my tank set up with a ric, neon green feather duster, hitchhiker brittle stars, red serpent star and maxi mini nem (although will probably remove this to another tank at some point). I think I will be adding zoas. more muschrooms and rics, and some sun corals down the road.

I hope this provides some help and I will be following along so that I can deepen my knowledge on an octo tank as well. Best of luck!

Thanks for the info wyssj. I'll check it out. I got the lights hooked up and going. He still just hides all the time. I thru a couple snails in there in hopes he would eat one. He didn't touch either. This evening I through a crab in there. Would like to see it eat a nice meal. It has only had a few small peices of lrs. I'm going to get some table shrimp and mussels and see if it likes either.

Well the reds worked. Got up this morning and it was all over the tank. It found the crab and was trying to take it back to its hide out. But the shell was just to big. Lol was very nice to actually see it out and about. Made me late though.

It's still alive. It don't come out until 4-5 am ish. So I don't get to see it much. I do have other videos I just never got around to posting. I'll see if I can get them up soon.
