Nano Reef start up
« on: August 01, 2016, 20:15:48 »
Have been out of the hobby for multiple years, but getting back into it.  Purchased a JBJ 28 nano cube, from Gerber's.  Wife wouldn't let me start any bigger.  Everything is going pretty well so far a couple little hiccups but nothing to bad.

Took this photo of the tank yesterday.  There is a bubble tip sea anemone hiding behind the rock work.  Unfortunately I haven't been able to coax him out yet.

Just curious.. How long has the tank been cycled?

Welcome back to the hobby!

How often should I be feeding my anemone?  I was told twice a week, but when I attempted to feed it today it didn't seem very interested.  Is there something I should be looking for?  A cue as to when to feed it?

Just fed my rose bubble and mini carpet some Atlantic salmon last night. They eat that every time.

I'll have to give that a try.  Speedy, kids picked the name, just isn't interested in the krill I've been offering to it.  Right now he's hanging upside down in a little cave like area.  Not sure how I'm going to get it to him, yet.

I've been trying to figure out the feeding of an anemone as well. What I have been doing is weekly tank feeding of LRS Reef Frenzy Nano, and putting a piece of raw, shelled, veined shrimp that I got a Meijers into my defroster as well. Seems letting the LRS be broadcast in the tank tells the anem that it's time to eat. Granted, that's just what I have seen so far, I could be underfeeding mine, but definitely "seeding" a tank with some "yummy" food (oyster eggs, fish eggs, clam juice, etc) definitely gets mine in the mood to eat, and he wastes no time.

BTW: Welcome back to the hobby! And I'll admit, I have been enjoying the AIO tanks but we are starting to grow out of it already. If you have time, definitely post your tank and updates in the "Member Tank Profiles". I have been using that to keep a very loose journal of my tank.

I would suggest adding more rubble / live rock. Not alot, just some place for the nem to shake off the shock of its new surroundings.

I only fed my nem "chunky" food about once a week.

Tank with added live rock.

Speedy in his current location pretending to be a chandelier.

Having a small algae bloom.  Apparently I hadn't set up my protein skimmer correctly so it wasn't skimming.  It has been corrected.

Added two new corals to the tank, a cabbage leather and a zoa, not sure what type.  They seem to be doing alright currently, I put them in on Wednesday.  Had a question on the placement of the leather, however.  Is it to low in the tank?  I read they like high light and medium to high flow.  My tank isn't very deep so I'm not sure if it is close enough to the light.  Also I'm currently just running the two pumps that came with the nano cube.  I turned off the wave maker as it killed a couple of clown fish, which really stunk.

Picture of full rock setup with new corals in there current home.

Close up of what I believe is a mico star, about the size of a dime, maybe a bit smaller.

Closer image of Cabbage Leather and Zoa.

Thanks for any insights.

Just mt 2 cents, I doubt if your wave maker killed your clowns. Most likely they died and were sucked into/onto it. Healthy clowns would be able to swim away from pump. Your leather should be fine and nice looking zoas.

I would be happy to donate a coral or two in support of a fellow citizen of Centerville :)

Pretty sure it was the wave maker.  The water was showing good at home and again when I had it checked at Gerber's.  They were fairly small around nickle size.  I was assuming they were babies.  I had bought two and the anemone, and the next morning both of them were just on the sand dead, no marks or anything.  Took them back thinking maybe sick, got two more and the next morning they had passed too.  Left the wave-maker on and a couple weeks later, water still reading good, picked up a bigger clown this time about two and a half inches.  He was fine when I went to bed and the next day he was also dead, but he had what I took to be trauma to the head.  Have turned off the wave maker so the pumps just run nonstop.  The anemone seems happier, but haven't purchased any more fish to test my theory.

Amphipod's wouldn't be able to kill a clown fish, right?  I watched them steal some krill from the anemone, but I wouldn't think they could kill a fish.  Nothing else is in the tank so if it's not the wave maker I don't know what it could be.

That's what I had thought too, but nothing.  Everything was showing 0 were it needed too.  I figured if I was going to lose something to tank parameters that the anemone would have gone first. Only other thing I could think of was I have an emerald crab in the tank, but I've seen what it looks like if they get a fish.  These looked fine just dead.  Might have been something I'm not seeing, but at this point don't know what it would have been.
