What screen resolution to you use?
« on: March 08, 2009, 17:34:14 »
To check your resolution, go to Start -> Control Panel -> Choose the Display icon and select the settings tab.

Hey Gary, wondering if you would consider changing the auto resize of the pictures on this forum based on poll results from 640x480 to 800x600 or 1024x768 if most have 1280x1024 displays. Let me know what you think.

Allowing users to change their vote because some may decide to change their resolution.

Are you talking about the thumbnails that show up in posts?

Isn't 640x480 plenty big enough? If we start increasing the size we increase the amount of bandwidth we use.

I increased it to 800x600.

Personally, I think 800x600 takes up too much of my screen, but it's looking like most people use a higher screen resolution so we'll go with that.

This is 800x600. Lazylivin's post above is 640x480. Let me know which you prefer.

I like the 800x600 much more.  Is there a way we can see what the higher resolutions would look like?

640x480 fits the screen better and loads faster.

I am not going to go above 800x600. That would make the picture too large for the people using the lower resolutions.

Not everyone can afford the larger monitors. I think 800x600 is a nice compromise.

Statistics are important information. What you can read from the statistics below is that most users are using a display with 1024x768 pixels or more, with a color depth of at least 65K colors.

http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_display.asp

But I think the 800x600 is best or less. why does it need to be so big?

800x600 is a good compromise. I checked it under all resolutions and as long as people are running 1024x768 or higher it should not require any left to right scrolling. Thanks for making the change Gary  ;D

Keep in mind that I am not an IT guy. I set things up so they looked good on the computer I have. I never thought about other resolutions. I guess I just thought those monitors would adjust the size to fill their screen.

The downfall to the larger pics is that they use more bandwidth and take longer to load. Probably not a big deal to most of us, but Im sure weve probably got some dial up users out there.

Gary will have to keep an eye on the bandwidth utilization with the increase in size. It never matters to me on whether its small or large. If its something I'm interested in, I'll click through to see the larger pictures on the photo hosting website (photobucket or similar). I use the thumbnails as a rough idea. Just my 2 cents.  :D

There wont be any increase in bandwith on the Ohio Reef site regardless of size because most pictures are on Photobucket etc.... The bandwith utilization is between the client (your computer) and the picture hosting site.

Well you have lazy people like me who instead of using something like photobucket will save the pic right to the site.

Regardless of the size the photo is displayed on the screen it is still the same amount of content. So if you have a 1 Megabyte picture that is taking two inches of your screen or 4 inches of your screen it is still 1 Megabyte.

I believe that we have up to 300GB per month. So far we're not coming close to that. The most we have used in any one month was 5.5GB the last 2 months.

Can we up the max pic size?  That way some of the High Res cameras can really show awsome pics.  If we start getting closeto using to much just lower it.  Since we have 294.5 GB to work with.

I can do that, on a temporary basis to see how it goes. If we start getting complaints of pages loading slow I may have to change it back.

So now we neew someone with a awsome camera to take a couple of cool high res pics and see what happens.  I know on my camera the high resolution is about 2.5mb.  I don't really have anything dealing with aquariums to take a pic of that would show a lot of color and detail.  At this time anyway.
