Title: has any body had to battle with dino algae before
Post by: Warhawk937 on May 01, 2018, 17:36:46
im looking for all the info I can on this algae that is rapidly ruining my tank.   The corals are getting covered and the fish have strings in their fins. I was able to identify it as dino.  Now im looking for a method of killing it off.  Ive heard about doing a 3 day black out not sure if i want top risk that.  i was thinking about a uv sterilizer to kill spores.

any thoughts ?? :nervous:

I have a buddy that had issues with it and started to dose hydrogen peroxide and says his tank is spotless clean now.  I have no experience with it but I am sure you can research it to find out how to use it.

Warhawk,
I recently had a dino outbreak in my display tank that I battled for several weeks.  I would siphon out as much as I could during water changes but it always came back.  I did a three day blackout and that pretty much took care of it.  I have read that hydrogen peroxide dosing also helps, but I didn't try that.  Hope this helps.

Thatnks for the feed back.  I’m going to start dosing peroxide.  Did you have any coral loss with your black out?  Did you feed your fish during that time?   Was there a long recovery?

No losses at all.  No recovery time for corals.  I didn't feed during the blackout.
Interesting read on reef2reef.com...https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/dinoflagellates-–-are-you-tired-of-battling-altogether.293318/
Many pages on the dino topic.

I highly recommend reading this thread. The first few pages explain WHY you get dino's, and all dino's are NOT created equal.

I just did a 3 day lights out on this tank as I was just beginning to see a few.

dino's are gone, coral is fine, and most importantly getting my nitrates and phosphates up a bit.

I did seveal 3 day black outs on my last tank as well when dino's started to appear and it work well.

Never used chemicals to fix things except for chemiclean when I did the blackouts.

I do 3 day blackouts twice a year with chemiclean whether I need to or not. It does wonders!
