Title: kenn's 37 Gallon build
Post by: Kenn on February 01, 2010, 22:48:28
OK

After much planning and saving, my soon to be 12 year old is ready to start his "Fragging Display Tank" :)

First thing that was purchased :

37 gallon tank : Purchased from jungliztkruger

sedona matching stand and canopy

custom acrylic sump built by blown76mav and jungliztkruger

mag7 return pump and plumbing (includes a union and ball valve)

hang on back overflow with drain plumbing

its a retrofit PC lighting has 4 65w bulbs and reflectors and ballast comes with 2 switches and power cords so you can have daylight and actinic on separate timers. 2x65 on each cord. and the lighting is mounted inside the hood.

Here he is with the new set up.

(https://ohioreef.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi698.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv342%2Fkennv431%2FNickandhistank.jpg&hash=23a16e47b2dd16d77a024f360de521d653f3a059)

We are moving the sump behind the tank and stand and are going to add a custom (that means we are going to make it :)) enclosure with an egg crate style top to allow for ventilation. This decision was made, due in no small part, because of the change in plans for the skimmer. I must say blown76mav and jungliztkruger did an awesome job building a sump that fits TIGHT but not too tight. However, I foresaw future maintainability issues, so I decided to do the behind the stand thing. as this is still under construction, pics of that part of the build will be posted later.

We knew going into this that the sea clone skimmer would only be a short term skimming solution untill my son could save the money to buy a larger more efficient unit. Little did we know HOW short the term would be . After some crazy meeting arrangements (all my fault) we finally got hooked up with riderc82. He donated a Coraline Supper Skimmer 220 body (the pumps epoxy fill that they use to seal the motor failed). all I can say is OMG  :o (my son's expression when he saw it). just a little bit of a size difference

(https://ohioreef.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi698.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv342%2Fkennv431%2FSS220.jpg&hash=5d664ea33a209cf4b1381737575213b0cc1ea217)

So now, as you might have noticed from my other post, we are looking for a pump for the skimmer.

My options are a MAG 5 equipped with a needle wheel impeller or an OME spec pump that is also equipped with a needle wheel impeller.
Have to make a decision on this this week.

Well...I think this is all for the 1st post from me. Nick however is writing a little post that he wants me to add, so that will be posted soon. ;D

Having used both the SeaClone and the Super Skimmer I'll tell you that while the SeaClone would probably be more then adequate for that size tank, but the maintenance required to keep the stupid thing happy would drive you bonkers. Those things are TOUCHY! The super skimmer is a good snag. I have an Eheim pump attached to mine and it's working wonders.

Today is the day we get started with the build ... hope to post pics through out the day

Any way. got the skimmer pump in and the media reactor so off to the garage to cut the lumber for the behind the tank sump area ... and do my sons B-Day party ( 8 yrs old ! HAPPY B-DAY JAROD ! )

What a snow day !

Question: with 4 65 watt PC, 2 are actinic and 2 are 10,000k. Should I change out 1 of the actinic lights for another 10,000k ?

How useful, pros cons, would it be ?

Kenn & Son  :)

Also ... Water going in the tank tonight !  :thewave

I think you should keep it balanced. The actinic lighting makes the colors of the coral, and fish stand out more.

That tank looks good. I remember my first tank looking at yours. It was a 29gal tall. I didnt know anything about anything and I had a huma huma, porky puffer and coral LOL. I watched my Huma eat everything that moved. I was buying 10 crab a week just to watch him eat them. He would grab the pointy part of the shell take the crab to the top of the tank and shake the shell tell the crab feel out.....then BOOM........crab was gone....lol

OH MY  :o you flatter me !

I humbly use a Sony H2 with an adapter and a macro lens.

you are only seeing the semi-good shots I can get out of what seems like hundreds I delete

I play with the white balance a lot. but my camera has limited control with it. Close up ,then MACRO setting is a must.

Turn off your AF illumination light. stops the cameras Auto Focus from bouncing off the glass and lets it focus on deeper objects.

These are just a few things that work for me. There are people on here (lazylivin for example to name just one) who take MUCH better pics and may be willing to give some better advice.

IMO the most important thing is "become one with your equipment"   meaning : I dont have the best camera out there, but I use it a lot. I know its functions inside and out as well what it can and cant do. It is rare that you will find me without my H2.. just ask my family

I hope this points you in the right direction  :)

Well .. After a Great trip to Coral Ranch (Support This Sponsor  :-ThumbUpsm )

We picked up our first Copper Banded Butterfly Fish ( 1st butterfly fish for that matter). We realize this fish will be a little cramped in its present home, however, a larger containment vessel is being planed out  :smiley-happy112:

Took some time off from cutting fallen tree limbs from the storm and made my way out to Coral Ranch.

Picked up a Rose BTA for my lonely GSM Clown (Ember :) )

It was love at first sight in the grow out tank

She darn near JUMPED into it :)

I picked it up from Rich at coral ranch. I was having the same problem with finding one that wasn't crazy $$$.

A Pro Lighting Inc. 400 watt MH Fixture with 2 28 watt CF actinic

WOW .. I just had a beloved family member offer to pick up the tab for led lights over my tanks. He wants me more energy efficient :)

So...After looking at the DIY LED post all I can say is OMG !

Can someone give me the cliff's notes on what I would need for a 48" 75g and a 20g ?  :)

All help is appreciated

PS... I am looking for a 20,000k look (on the blue side)

When you bring the saw back my way, we can talk LED's.   I can do dimming adjustments to show you what you'll get

But for the blue look, you are going to want 3 royal blue to every cool white.

Since my 37g is migrating to a 75g I thought I would put this here and not a new post.

I got my 700g overflow kit and 3/4" loc-line return kit in today from www.glass-holes.com (http://www.glass-holes.com).

GREAT company to deal with. answered all my questions promptly and I got free shipping.

Both kits came complete with glass cutting bits :)

If anyone is interested in a pic of what you get with the kits just let me know and I will post it.

Now I have to find a sump :(
