Cheato refugium in sump
« on: August 20, 2017, 18:20:23 »
Hello all, I have a 30 gallon eshopps sump that I would like to try to add some cheato and a light to help keep my water parameters stable. The only place in my sump I can think of to put it is in the same chamber as my return pump. It's covered with a sponge filter as you can see on the picture. Anyone have any thoughts on this or would I just be making a mess in my sump?

Cheato will break apart and you'll get pieces of it everywhere. Including stuck in your equipment. I personally grow caulerpa instead. However, It can get messy too and you have to keep it trimmed back.

Can you reposition your skimmer and add a baffle to create a new chamber?

Unfortunately the skimmer is too long to turn sideways. I could take out the filter bags and place something to ease the flow into the sump then add a baffle to make it a compartment. I feel like it might lose some benefits by putting the cheato or caulpra before the skimmer compartment though.

I don't think you'd lose anything. That's how my Skimz sump is, factory made.

This is what I came up with. I removed my filter bags and covered my rectangular plastic housings with mesh to catch debris and help slow down the flow a little. Then bought a waste basket and drilled lots of holes in the basket. To contain the chaeto, I made a nylon mesh bag to fit around the inside of the waste basket. I felt like it needed to be contained because loose peices started flowing out of the holes I drilled. Hopefully the bag doesn't choke the chaeto and it lives a long nitrate filled life .

I hear you! Just when you think you have a handle on something and you can relax, there's something new to get into. I love it though!
