POTM Prize Discussion
« on: November 09, 2007, 09:20:13 »

As always, please be aware of the rules.

And the rules can change without notice :-) Rule # 6 was recently changed.

"6.  Each month's winner will have their photo placed on the main page of Ohio Reef. On occassions, prizes may be offered at the discretion of the officers."

It says "on occasions" that doesn't mean you will get a prize.  And remember if you don't like the prize that is offered or not, you don't have to play the game.  :)

I think we (meaning all the members of Ohio Reef) clearly understand that participation in this club (whether attending meetings, participating on this forum or entering photo contests) is completely voluntary. If we don't like it, "[we] don't have to play the game/[ participate]."

My post was not about the existing rule or a clarification of the
existing rule, but rather, to simply point out how rule #6 on prizes
recently changed (emphasis added on the words "recently" and
"changed"). Under the "prior rule," the winner at least had the option to
receive an unframed matted photograph of his or her winning picture.

Maybe this would be a good item to place on the agenda at the November
meeting for the officers and members to discuss? A photo contest
without prizes will not generate as much interest as a photo contest
with prizes. As it stands now, the winning photograph each month basically
becomes the property of the Ohio Reef Club (to be displayed on
the front page of this website). Perhaps if the club reduced the
number of contests per year (for example, just offering a Fall,
Winter, Spring and Summer contest), then prizes could be awarded again
to the winning participants and hopefully the event would become bigger
and better than it is now (and attract new members).

Who and / or what determines if a prize is offered and when a prize is offered, who supplies the prize.

Should the sponsors be putting up some sort of prize for the winner? I would not have a problem contributing to that.

in the beginning, we had a supply of gift certificates that were being handed out or the picture was printed and matted.  those certificates ran out and we have had only one taker (ordered, hasnt arrived yet) on the picture so far.  i think we need to drop it or move it to quarterly.  i dont think we have the desire to run or fund a monthly contest.
That one guy who used to be on all the time......

Yeah, that's a good point. Perhaps eliminating the wording of "prizes being awarded at digression" or how ever it was worded should be changed or eliminated. It's kind-of cool that the winner's picture is posted, maybe that recognition is "prize" enough.  Just my thoughts.....

FWIW, I made the officers aware of the rewording of the rules.

Some very good history on the POTM and also some great ideas.  We'll talk about it at the Nov meeting and make a decision on how it will run.  I'll look into funding for the POTM.

Was this discussed? Any changes?

We are going to skip Dec and start it back up first of the year.  Joel with Aquariums Etc has agreed to sponsor the Photo Contest with a prize for the winner.  I think we are going to have it 6 times a year (every other month).

Sounds good. I'm getting a camera for Christmas so I'll have all kinds of crappy pics to submit.  ;D
