Fluval EVO 13.5 My 1st Aquarium
« on: January 08, 2018, 16:54:02 »
Greetings everyone.  I just recently started in the SW hobby.  I went with the Fluval EVO 13.5 nano tank.  I am fortunate enough to have a friend that has helped me out quite a bit in regards to getting started.  I have done most of my research on the Nano-Reef forum but I hope to learn more here as well.

I started my tank up on 11/21/2017.  Here is where it stands as of two weeks ago.

Excellent start.  Great color and everything looks to be doing very well.  Good job.  When problems arise dont hesitate to post up.  Everyone here loves this hobby and is willing to help with what might come up.

Thoughts / tips on getting rid of Cyano?  My sand bed is getting quite covered in it.  I have been running my lights from 2:00 PM to 9:30 PM with a sunrise / sunset timer that works with my stock lighting. I just reduced my light time by an hour (starting at 3:00 PM) I feel that my flow is good, this just started happening two weeks ago when I started to direct feed all of my corals a cocktail of reef roids and live phytoplankton.

I have started to do this with the coral feeding, I feed once a week on the same day I do my weekly water change.  I feed the coral and then a few hours later I do the water change.  My logic here is to keep the nutrients down.

My guess is with the nano tank even small amount of nutrient introduction is a heavy load.

I have not done any sandbed vacuuming as part of my water changes, perhaps I should start there?

great looking video NanoDad
Are you sure its Cyano and not Diatoms...... all new tanks will most likely go thru a diatom bloom they are not pretty but go away after a few weeks.
I wouldn't stir the sand up too much in that size tank but you can suck it out with a turkey baster.
If it is cyano your going to need to use Chemi Clean. This does suck the oxygen out of the water so you would need to add bubbler to the tank for a few days
I would also suggest more snails to help with algae issues that will arise and some to stir the sand up a little

Here is what I am looking at in the bed.  On the edges where the bed meets the glass it looks slightly red in color and starting to grow "hair"

Thats Diatoms will go away as tank matures usually takes 3 weeks to a couple months. looks good just a normal process
cyano is usually dark red and a mat of slime

Things seem to be running well so far.  I ran my parameters this morning, and I'm getting consistent results.  Salinity is 1.025 according to my refractometer.

I would like to expand upon my clean up crew, perhaps more snails?

Current coral, these were all sourced from Curtis aka AnotherPlanet.  Picture quality is low as these were taken with my Iphone6s

Excellent. You mentioned a clean up crew in an earlier post. I like the Florida fighting counch. They do a nice job on the sand we. Probably  1 or 2 would be nice. They’ve got long snouts and they’re kind of fun to watch.

Some updated pictures from my display.  I am starting to see / feel the limitations of my stock lighting.  I am noticing that some of the frags are a bit on the dull side in regards to color.  I intend on running this all in one as is for at least a year.  I have young boys at home that I know will NOT be able to keep their hands out of an open display tank.

Looking good. Maybe add some nassarius snails to churn the sand a bit?

More snails is on my radar.  I have one nassarius in there now, I had a second one but it somehow died.

Your doing a good job, everything is growing nicely. Consider getting some Chemiclean in there to nip that cyano bacteria in butt before it gets out of hand.
