Rearing Peppermint Shrimp
« on: January 22, 2012, 02:12:43 »
I noticed one of my Peppermint Shrimp with eggs. Thought why not try to raise them. Put her in a small 1/2 gallon plastic pail with air and heat last night. Got up this morning and she had released the young. Here are a few pics. They are less then 24 hours old and really tiny, hard to see with the eye.

This one eating a baby brine shrimp

COOL!!! If you decide to raise and sell them I would like to be on the list!  Maybe you could add some aptasia to your shrimp area to get them used to the taste and they would hunt for that in our tanks after we buy them from you1  :)  Just a thought.

Very, Very cool Lazy.... keep us posted on the mortality rate - very curious since I have had a few peppermint shrimp with eggs in my frag tank - and even though I have tons of pods and pulsing Xenia like Rich - I have never seen a juvenile peppermint shrimp in my system...

On day two and they are all still alive. I had a small 3g picotope tank so moved them to there. Feed frozen baby brine again this morning. Going to get some brine eggs to hatch today. Not sure if that is any better but I can enrich with phyto and selcon so maybe? I am guessing there is somewhere around 200-300 baby's.

Might want to consider some GP's from Brine Shrimp Direct. Good job Brian, wish I had more space to dabble and such, hope they grow for you.

Let me know how this works for you!!! I have 3 peppermint shrimp and theres usually two that have eggs whenever I notice. I briefly thought about trying to raise them, but since I am so new to sw I figured they would just serve as coral food. But maybe if you have some luck I will be more inclined to give it a try!

There isn't much info out there on breeding. A few have been successful but I haven't done all that much research yet either.

Update: Nothing really changed today. Just replaced the air pump with a smaller one. All still eating good. Gave them some live baby brine today. It is harder for them to hold on to then the frozen/dead baby brine.

Well they had their first molt Tuesday and should have a second one tomorrow. I counted 45 still alive. Not to bad but to go farther I would need specialized configuration. There is very little info out their about the tank configuration. I have no issues with food and water quality but more the water movement. They are extremely fragile and apedenges get damaged very easy affecting ability to eat. They also have to stay in suspension and can't sit on bottom or they die. Ever so soft fine air bubbles are required but will damage them if the get in the flow. I need some plankton cloth. Anyone know where I can get local?

What are you keeping them in...tank wise? And any type of filtration or aeration or something? Just wondering because I have been closely monitoring this thread to see how you are doing. I have 3 pep shrimp in my biocube 29 and they constantly have eggs. I tried catching one last week, as it was only a few days from them all hatching but...well lets just say the shrimp won that battle :)

I checked each of the 3 tonight and one has a new batch of eggs already started and I want to catch her up and try raising them as well.

Also, what are you feeding them? BBS or something?

Thanks

They are in a small 3g picotope tank. There is a small heater and air stone with fine bubbles. Nothing else is in the tank and no filtration. I change 90% of the water every third day. I don't think it is the best environment for them. I ordered a book on rearing peppermint shrimp and waiting for that to get here to see what I need to do. There isn't much info out there so I am counting on this to be a good book. I feed them live baby brine shrimp.

Small works pretty good right now for water changes. These guys aren't much larger then a baby brine shrimp and much much smaller then an adult brine shrimp. It is hard for me to find them at times. A 10g would probably be my next step but that is likely a good 2 weeks away if they survive that long. But thanks for the equipment offers.

To my surprise they are doing really well. Since this last morph yesterday they seem to swim with purpose now instead of just where the flow takes them. They have got some new legs that they use to swim with and can even see them chase down the live baby brine. I have to siphon out the brine shrimp every couple days because they grow to quick, much faster then the peppermint shrimp. The hunted could end up being the hunters. Here is a couple snaps from this evening.

If I was sucessful in rasing any significant numbers I would sell to local fish stores because it would fall under commercial sales for Ohio Reef. However I would share my methods so anyone could raise them. I am along way from claiming victory though. Still waiting on the book I ordered to arrive.

All of them still alive. Kind of a PIA with the daily water changes. Added flake food to their diet now. Need to get a sump hooked up so I can add filtration. A tank with just water is really hard to keep clean.
The mother released another few hundred young last night. I put them in a small 5gallon tank.

I picked up 3 10g tanks today. 2 for shrimp and one for sump. Trying to determine how best to get water to the sump without taking the shrimp with it. I know it will consist of some super fine mesh but not exactly sure how to do it yet.

My buddy used to raise FW shrimp and he had stand pipes that he would put sponge collars around them to keep the shrimp from going down the drain. he didnt run a sump but he did have an auto top off on his tanks setup on a sprinkler system. I am sure he probably lost a few here and there but not too many. also it may help if you throw in some small groups of cheato for the shrimp to hang onto so they are not getting blown around the tank.

That is good idea when they settle. Right now they are planktonic. Required to be in suspension all the time. In the ocean they don't have any walls, they float in super large open areas. Even small bumps against the glass can cause their leg to break. Eventually their last larva molt they will do what is called settling and at that time no longer need to be in suspension and I can add a macro algae to absorb nutrients and something for them to hold on to. I had two of them die today. Moved them to a 10g tank so they may have gotten injured in the move. They are very delicate. The second hatch is doing really well. They seem stronger then the first so hope to get a good survival rate.

39 Days Post Hatch 3 of the shrimp have settled. They now look like small adult shrimp and no longer are planktonic. Eyes are attached to their body instead of on long stalks. The others should settle over the next few days.

Here is a crappy picture of one of the settled shrimp

Here is another batch of larva that are 18 Days Post Hatch

18DPH shrimp are in this tank

39DPH shrimp are in this tank

I have about 250$ in the first group for which 16 survived. Probably have about 75$ in the second batch for which 24 survived. So it is better but it takes a lot of time. I could probably get it down to about 35$ per batch and likely get more to survive but it is so much work. Their wouldn't be much profit because I think stores buy them wholesale for about $1.50 - $1.75 each.

But you look at the knowledge gained. And the experience. Those are priceless. Being able to make most of your $ back is just a plus.

They do like Aiptasia. I think will stick to coral farming. That is a lot easier

I was watching a peppermint shrimp eat a small aiptasia this morning and it reminded me of this journey.
