Coral Growth competition
« on: December 30, 2013, 20:21:09 »
Well out with the old in with the New Year, so what better way to start a new year than having a growth competition. Each participant gets one small frag, im thinking a single polyp of the same zoanthid, and by end of the year we see who has the best growth. Each participant gets a free frag. so whats the catch? Just each participant must provide the following:

tank size
Light fixture, schedule of light
Salt mix
Parameter of minerals
Nitrate level
If dosing any chemicals please name them
temperature of water
type of filtration
and so forth

By the end of year the winner gets to brag to everyone else how awesome he or she is and club bragging rights ;)
Im thinking 10 participants for each club. So far we got care4reef , bigbluereef and Ohio Reef involved so if you are interested please respond to this thread, no pm please.
Frags can be picked sometime next month, the earlier the better.
Thanks and happy reefing!!

You're in centerville right?  I was considering not doing it because I'll find it hard to take time out to go pick up a frag but if you could bring an extra one for me that'd be great.

If I can get a frag that way count me in.

Should I post the specs for the current tank I have or for the new one?  Or both?

I will be going down to Ideal on Friday about 1pm.  If you want me to pick up a frag, you will have to let Johnny and I know. I just ck'd my water and am ready to rumble!
Johnny, are we going to do a monthly ck in with pics and water parameters?

Barb 937-269-6658

I think it would be cool if we could do this, love to see the growth rate from everyone. Again we can learn from each participant, if someone is showing great growth rate cause they are using fuel for example as long as you document it and decide to use the product too go for it.

Okay great.  I noticed you didn't add my tank specs, they were on the 2nd page, copied here to make it easier.

tank size.   20gallon
Set up march 2012
Light fixture, schedule of light.   2xfull spectrum led fixtures. On from 9 am until 5.30 pm.
Salt mix.    reef crystals
Ca.  420
Alk.  9 dkh
Phosphate. 0
Nitrate level.  0
Dosing     I dose alk once per day, 3ml
I dose ca once per day. 3 ml
temperature of water.  78
type of filtration.   Live rock.  My setup is similar to a bio cube, so aio, I have carbon and gfo in a bag in the back chamber and I change it out once a month.   I also use filter floss.
Mixed reef, lps, sps & softies

When I transfer tanks I will be sure to update the changes, not much should change except water volume.

It is a really sweet looking zoa and I have never seen any like it before. Deepwater are really tough, it is going to be a challenging contest.

Pictures give a good indication of where it is in my tank, up high I. The frag rack (away from idiot hermits), shaded by a frag of monticap.  I also have egg crate over the top of the tank and a second piece over the frags to filter the light a bit.  It's colorful and pretty though.

My frag was moved today from my 20g into a 3G holding/ qt tank.  It was dipped in flatworm exit & a coral rx type product.  If its going to melt now would be the time.  If it doesn't melt then either next weekend or the weekend after it'll be moved to my 40 g. When its moved ill update the tank specs.

Frag update:  it was in the 40g and managed to survive the freak unplanned cycle the tank went through.  It's now back in the 3G qt with the other corals that survived.

7 heads now I believe.  It's the middle one.

Thanks!

These must be super hardy, I lost corals in the tank debacle over the last few weeks and these just kept on growing.  Hopefully once they're settled back down they'll grow even more.

I wonder how everyone else's is doing, in the other groups I mean.

I have updates on my tank conditions.  The frag is now in a 40b with a 20+g sump.  I'll take a new photo tonight during wc.  Light schedule is the same, lights are the same.  I'm not sure how many heads now, maybe 8, i'll count tonight.

I have 15 heads :)

If its not going on anymore fine, but maybe we could keep this thread and update it until the end of the year, it'd be interesting to see how many people's frags survived and how well they grew in 1 year.

So who still has these polyps growing.

I've have mine.  I need to count and get a good updated picture.   I don't have a lot, as my softy tank had the alk dip to about 5, and that stunted everything.

Here is a current picture.  There are 12 polyps.

I still have mine, they're among the corals that survived the various crashes my tank has had this year.  No good photos at present though.
