Skimmer pump suggestion....
« on: May 11, 2006, 15:08:57 »
Hi all,

I'm looking to swap out my venturi-based skimmer water pump for something with a needle-wheel.  The skimmer seems to work well just after the body and venturi are cleaned, but effectiveness and bubble production seem to drop off in a hurry.

I'm considering either the Sedra 5000 or the Ocean Runner 2700.  I've read on RC, that both pumps will work well with the Jebo 520 skimmer that I have.

The skimmer came with an AP 1200 pump rated for 825 gph.

Does anyone here have a preference, or pros/cons for either pump?

Add'l pump suggestions are also welcome.

Thx

FWIW I have a Dolphin DP-800 which came with my ER 12-2 that's never seen a drop of water that I can sell.  $50

It's suppose to be pretty much the same as the Sendra line however inbetween the SP7000 & SP9000

Well PRice comes into concideration I can get you the ocean runners for arounf $60-70 depending on moddle you choose.

Do you have a lot of bio-load.  If you have little bio-load a skimmer will not function very well.  Let me reword that, your skimmer will function great but if your bio-load is not there to keep up the skimate production then it will appear to stop working. This may not be your problem since skimate production picks back up after cleaning. That Being said I feel a needle wheel/pinwheel pump is better.  I have a sendra 5000 on my euro reel and a Ocean runner 3700 (i think that is hte modle # it is re-branded) on my Coral vue skimmers both are working great.  The ocean runner seems to be affected more by head pressures.  So do not run it in a sump with to low of a water level.

The Ocean runner has a threaded connection to a union and the sendra has a slip connection both will hookup at about the same height so you have to make sure your plumbing is compatible or can be modified.  That should not be that hard to do in most cases.

Hey Scott...

My bio-load is very light and the skimmer is sort of insurance as I ran without one for years.  I'm on the fence about replacing the pump but feel like if I'm spending the money to run a pump, it might as well be an efficient one.  What would I need to do to order a pump thru you?

What's the diff between the Sedra and the Ocean Runner?  What size would your recommend?  Main display is 75 gals.  Skimmer chamber is 8.5" x 23".
