40B Build Thread
« on: March 17, 2018, 18:14:52 »
Since my main tank is thriving, I need something else to tinker with.

I purchased a 40B when Petco was having their $1/gallon sale and it’s been sitting around collecting dust. I’ve slowly been picking up parts here and there. So about 2 weeks ago I decided to get started on the sump. I knew what I wanted this time after buying a Skimz sump for the main tank. There were just things missing. So here are some pics of my completed 20L custom sump.

I’ve purchased the eShopps 800gph overflow box. 2 Channel. I am going to split the main siphon channel to run to each end of the sump with a gate valve on each side. This will allow me to have a low flow fuge while pumping a high gph thru the rest of the sump. I also used black acrylic for the fuge wall to inhibit stray light. Looking forward to seeing it in action, but it still may be a while.

Good job Jessie, looks fun. What livestock do you plan to keep in it?

Haven’t decided yet. Was gonna be a frag tank but a 40B is really a lot of area. So, it will take a while to decide

Jesse, very nice work, it is always great to see these ideas come together. You had mentioned that one that I had did not have the ideal Filter sock area, now I see what you mean - good work. I do have a question, my mind is stuck on the Fuge area and maybe the pic does not show that area well. Water In Water Out, I'm confused a bit on this concept, meaning it looks like the water flow will reach equilibrium, little in and little out? Does the black flow plate have a raised edge at the bottom that does not show in the picture? If it does not then the water column must climb to over come the black flow plate at the top but then what - equilibrium? What am I missing?

  Cheers!

Thanks Rick. With my current sump, it is a one way flow. OF chamber to fuge chamber to skimmer chamber to return chamber. This setup makes you have to compromise flow   thru the sump due to the fuge. So, what I am doing is putting a T in my overflow downpipe (or maybe on my return pipe so that it’s filtered) and feeding both ends of the sump. The water in the fuge area will fill up to the weir and then over and under the bubble trap to the return chamber. Basically the sump will have a bi-directional feed toward the return chamber. Does the help explain it?

Great job Jessie, nice and clean. Where did you find the slab of wood to use as a top?

Thanks Brian. It also matches the top to the stand I made for my main system. Lucky I am close to The Hardwood Store in Enon. I picked up some select, rough cut Ash. Ripped it, ,planed it, cut 4 pieces and glued them together.

And now to the nerve wracking part. Am I gonna have the water level above the trim? Am I leaving enough room to clean around the OF? Is my plumbing going to be best served with this location....

I know, it’s a $40 tank and I shouldn’t stress...

Dry fitting everything. I am liking this setup a lot. I was originally going to make it a frag tank, but now I’m second guessing that. I think I’m just gonna make it a QT/Frag/2nd display tank mostly housing my montis until I’m sure the Nudi’s have been eradicated from the 75g DT. Going to get started on the plumbing tomorrow.

Thank you Rick. Leak tested it today and made some minor modifications after the wet run.

Are you going with the same substrate as your main tank?  I need to make a decision on substrate for my tank,  I really like what you have in your main tank.  I forgot what you told me it was.
thanks
jeff

Jeff, I debated on whether to go bare bottom or not. I decided to go ahead and get the same sand as the main tank. Carib Sea Special Grade. I elected to go with dry sand this time. I usually get the live sand but it’s very messy.

I’ve used the Carib Sea special grade in both of my tanks.

Dry, rinsed. Works great!

Takes a bit of current to move it as well which I like.
