Need a Temporary Hang-On Filter
« on: February 15, 2014, 14:25:47 »
Does anyone have a hang on filter they are willing to let us borrow until ours comes in the mail?  We need to get our fish into our QT ASAP, but without a filter, our fish would probably die.

were you the one who posted threads on ich?

If so get them out of the tank ASAP.... they can survive w/o a filter and must be treated before the ich gets to severe.  You need a pump or airsone in there to oxigenate the water and just feed sparingly.  Monitor parameters and do water changes as needed until the filter comes in.....

I only run a sponge filter on my qt. And do regular water changes. Air stones are a must. Once the ick get so bad on a fish, it's pretty much to late.

Thanks gentlemen,  we got a hold of one for $15 and are now transferring fish to QT. Any suggestions on what steps to take to lower salinity and to how low to go?

It's 50 gallon, right? Take a gallon of salt out. Put a gallon of fresh in. Wait a couple hours. Repeat, checking salinity often. I think it has to be at 1.009? Someone will fill you in on that. I can't remember off hand. You must not rush the salinity drop. Must be gradual.
