DIY Frag Rack
« on: November 27, 2008, 23:43:21 »
Hey guys, I am in the processing of building a frag tank. When it came to the frag rack I wanted something that still allowed some light through to the lower light corals below so I came up with the frag rack pictured below. It is 1/4 acrylic from Lowes that I cut on my table saw and drilled holes for the plugs. I plan on having about 5 or 6 of these in the tank at various heights.

They are grill clips, not sure what they are for but glue nicely to the tank. Found them in the same isle at Lowes as the acrylic.

I built a half moon frag rack but mine wasn't as fancy as yours.  I cut a half moon piece of acrylic and super glued a mag-float to it and called it a day but it was functional.

I may steal your design. A half moon shape sounds really cool!

Keep in mind that when the tank is up and running you wont be getting light under the frag rack because the frag rack will be covered in coraline. Acrylic is a magnet for coraline.

I had not thought of that. Maybe I will make a few extra so I can replace them every couple months and soak them in vinegar.

I cut the Acrylic on a table saw and it did chip a bit because I don't have a fine tooth blade. Then I sanded smooth with a belt sander.

What about water flow?  If the tank is filled with these shelves, will the water flow still be okay?  Obviously you wouldn't have any water flow coming up from underneath like with plain old egg crate.

I haven't even tried corals yet, so take this comment for what is worth... much less than $.02.  But, as an engineer, I can't stop the 'what about this and what about that'.

Yes, I agree it will deffintley affect water flow however I have 1800GPH flow in the 33 gallon which is about 54 times turnover. Right know there is so much churn in the tank I dont think that I will be able to add sand.
