Vicki's 14G biocube
« on: December 27, 2011, 20:00:54 »
My biocube has been up and running for about 1 month.  I started off with a 5 g hex but that tank was just awful so i transferred everything over to the biocube which i like much better.

Corals: zoas, a mushroom, some gsp, kenya tree and some pulsing xenia and a 1 head of frogspawn.

No fish just yet.

Please excuse the blurry shot (the better ones are on my phone which i can't find right now) and the veggie clip, i forgot to take it out after feeding the turbo snail some nori.

Thanks everyone.  Rock is from Reef cleaners, it came in 2 large pieces and i chopped it up.  Tried to do an interesting 'scape since i'll be hopefully looking at it for some time.

I'm currently looking for something to fill the spot on the top ledge, i was thinking of a sun coral or maybe a torch or hammer.  Acros were suggested but i don't think i have enough light/ am not really ready to try sps.

I'll try and get some better photos up soon.

Took more photos this morning

2 hermits and my odd ball frag (zoas, kenya tree & pulsing xenia)

Long stem zoas with 2 new babies

Pulsing xenia recovering after disintegrating when added to tank about 2 weeks ago.

Frogspawn stretching and gsp

Up to date fts, still a bit blurry but iphones don't capture movement well.

I highly recommend doing the led or halide upgrade. If I'm not mistaken there was a member who did a DIY led upgrade to his biocube. It turned out really nicely. I'll see if I can't find the thread for you. It would probably save you some money in the long run.

Thanks.  They've got 2 new heads already.  I'll be getting another zoa frag on tuesday when my devils hand leather arrives, the guy said he'd put in a colourful zoa frag too.  Can't wait to see what he sends.

Just kidding, the upgrade to leds should help reduce the heat greatly in the hotter months.

That would be nice.  I have pcs on one of my tanks and the summer was a nightmare trying to keep it cool.  Yet the tank with LED's didn't heat up at all, maybe 1 degree change.  I'll definitely try and do the upgrade before the summer then.

Another pic:

My constantly hungry frogspawn.  I'm hoping the fact it is hungry all the time means it wants to grow nice and big in my tank.  Bumping up his feeding to try and get rid of these sweeper tentacles.

The sweepers that you have out during the day, are more likely caused by too much flow.

I thought it was either flow or food, i had the flow turned completely off today (killing aiptasia) for about 30 minutes, i watched the frogspawn and if anything the whole thing got bigger, inc. the sweepers.

I'll play around with the placement of the powerhead a bit more to see if it makes a difference. i also wanted to split the outflow of the BC and am looking for tubing to do this.

No need to be sorry Vicki. I'm sure you could do it one of two ways, either a spray bar style tube or a split dual return off of the main return. Can you tell me what size outer diameter the return line is for a BC?

Didn't see this reply until now.  The return line is approx 1inch, maybe a tad smaller.  I managed to fix it temporarily using waterweld and the original piece.  I'm looking into getting some loc line from grainger next time i go there.   I'd like to split it soon though since i'm getting a dead spot in one corner and getting some cyano.

Are you going to split the line by adding a wye loc line and two nozzles? or use PVC to to run a nozzle to the opposite side? Pump upgrade?

Probably not going to do a pump upgrade just yet, would like to but cash is strapped right now.  Probably just going to use the locline and split that way, all i really need is flow going towards the front of the tank and then with the other side of the split going along the back of the tank towards the intake.  I have the powerhead right at the front (opposite corner to the outflow) buffering the flow from the outflow and it seems to be creating a still patch right in the middle of the tank and right in the back corner (probably both back corners) is a dead spot.

Hey just a heads up there is a guy on Ebay that makes LED kits for biocube's and they are pretty reasonibly priced, i looked at one for my biocube8 and it is only like $75. It bolts in place of your PC lighting and doesnt cover up the moonlights. I am hoping to order one for mine soon, just thought I would pass the info on.

Thanks.  I currently don't have moonlights, it's a used biocube and the store lost the power adapter so i'm looking for a new one.  I'll look on ebay for the LED's, it would be easier than making them myself.

Yeah one of mine is dim so I was looking for a replacement last night online, If you google biocube parts and search there were serveral places that carried the the power adapter, But you could probably go to radioshack and get a power adapter that would work just as good. I will double check when I get home from work but I am pretty sure that all it is is the plug and cord, nothing special. I'm not an electrical expert though, I am sure there are some guys on here that know more then me when it comes to that.

Haven't updated in a while, busy with work and school.  The tank is coming along great, everything has new growth, i did lose a small colony of misc zoas to the pox which was unfortunate but everything else looks great.

Try to ignore the dirty glass and the PO looking GSP.  That green devils hand on the sand bed is usually attached to the rock bridge but was taken down last week so i could remove some bubble algae which was annoying it.  I'm still looking for something wonderful to fill that ledge, i'm hoping i can find a nice hammer at the fragswap.

Darcy the Picasso clown is still around, becoming male if the behaviour is anything to go by.  He currently is living (or should i say is being forced to live) under a rock.

His not so nice lady friend Lizzy is bossing him around a little too much.  Once things settle down they'll make a good looking pair.

Thank you.  Sadly this tank had a catastrophic failure last weekend.  The bottom of the tank cracked and started to leak water.  All the rock and stock are now in a plastic tub in my living room and the biocube is at work being cursed at every time i see it :)

Today i switched my dwarf puffer into a 10 g tank and emptied his 20g, the reef will be moving into that tank sometime next week once i get the filtration sorted out.

Great looking tank!

If I may, RapidLed has a great retrofit for the BioCube...wish it had been available for mine when I upgraded.  Here's the link.  I would highly recommend dimmers though, even at 700ma it's easy to over-light the tank.  I used 6 Royal Blue and 6 Cool White without lenses on that fixture, which looked good.

Also, if you are looking for some cheap random flow, look into the Hydor Flo.  I had two in my 12g and loved them.

**Edit: LOL, apparently my timing is terrible.  Good luck with the new tank!

My reef came through the biocube's demise with only 1 casualty.  A moment of silence please for Titan the turbo :(  RIP...

Anyhoo, the biocube suffered a crack along the bottom panel, not sure how or why but there is no sense dwelling on things i can't fix.  Tank in a tub lasted about 2 weeks while i DIY-ed myself a nice 20g AIO.  I reused a lot of the equipment from the biocube because i am very poor and couldn't afford to get new stuff.

voila!

(heater is gone, that was there during the move from tub to tank)

My fish are no longer fighting, Darcy's fins and tail are healing nicely and all the corals are doing just fine.  The lovely pink zoas i got at the swap already have new heads.

My dad managed to find me a really nice sturdy light fixture so today i ordered a par38 bulb from LEDTriC.com which should be here in a few days.

I'm keeping an eye out for a mini cycle but so far so good.

I quite like the rockscape, i think it will grow on me.

Not too sure really.  It looks like this:

I can maybe put another piece of glass over the bottoms piece and silicone it in place, not sure i really want to try in case i end up with a very wet floor.

That's a crazy break, but I think that fix would be fine without too much risk.  You could even use a thin piece of acrylic to get the shape right. Silicone the crack and bottom, drop in the new piece, seal the edges.  Could even do the same from the bottom for extra peace of mind.

Just a quick update with a few new pics.  i need a better camera but my phone will have to do for now.

New FTS

New acan from saltcritters (would definitely recommend them as a vendor, nice frags at very good prices.  I had no issues and would buy from them again)

Bingley.  Love this fish, nice and active and good keeping the flat worms at bay.  Also a good buddy for my female clown, Lizzy, he keeps her from bullying the male too much.

Hammer, not sure if there's been a whole lot of growth yet but it adds some nice variation and colour.  Also Lizzy in the background :)

Lots of lovely things happening with my tank.  I sold/traded some of my soft corals and got a new pink birdsnest frag, it's lovely!

Did some much needed tank maintenance and gluing the other night and i am no prepping for my vacation next week; i'll be leaving my dad in charge of my 3 tanks.  He'll handle the betta just fine, she's easy, the salt tank should be okay too so long as he follows instructions, i'm a little worried about my poor puffer, he eats frozen food and if it's left too long it gets nasty, or if he eats too much he'll blow up like a balloon.

Okay, so i wasn't sure where to put this but.. i entered my reef into a competition run by LEDTRIC.com to win a new bulb/possible lamp fixture for this tank.  It seems to be turning into a popularity contest on facebook so this is where i need your help lovely Ohioans :)  If you have a facebook account could you please take a few seconds and go to : https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.230898317017500.53232.189763101131022&type=1

My reef is under Phoenix91's 20G.  if you 'like' my photo and vote for my reef i would be very appreciative.

Tank has been having a few issues lately, my new cleaner shrimp died suddenly and now my tank has a tiny ammonia spike; not sure why really but i'm working on it with wc's to see if i can get it back to 0.  Looking at the tank you'd never know, everything looks great, nice and healthy.  Fish are doing good.  Lizzy has grown and is twice the size of Darcy now, Bingley has also grown.

No new corals just coral growth.

Thanks Lazy, yeah i really like them they're growing so fast.

Kenn, thank you!  yes, she's quite the character.  I can't get a good top down shot that doesn't have her face in it somewhere.

Photo dump :)

I'm sort of stuck resting right now since my big fat horse has broken my knees because he is too WIDE so i've been tank watching and taking lots of silly photos.

The glare from that window really does ruin all my shots

Lizzy (Darcy isn't as easy to photograph, he's still skittish and doesn't like my phone for some reason)

Happy war coral growing very fast

Now the red monti cap has recovered it is growing so fast, i'm pleased i didn't give up on it.

Now 2 heads, at feeding time

New zoas

I also might have mentioned in previous posts how much i hate these things, but i feel it needs repeating.  I loathe them.

My tank is still doing great.  Had a little re-scape and re-glue.  Double the light coming soon :)  Also new return pump to replace the biocube stock pump i'm currently using.

I've cut down feeding and am actually paying attention to see the fish eat everything to try and help with the flatworms, plus i upped my siphoning and it seems to be making an impact.

New Mille :)

Thanks!  I like the small tank but really wish it was just a tad bigger, a nice 40b would be ideal.

My mam brought me back a piece of rock from her vacation in hawaii, she picked it out the sea and thought t would look nice in my tank; which is lovely of her it's possibly the most interest she's shown in the tank so far :)  I'm not sure if i should do anything to it before adding it to the tank.  Any suggestions?

One of my LEDs went out last week and LEDtric are replacing it with a new version which is full spectrum.  Their customer service has been great.

The flatworms are still driving me beyond crazy, every week i wage this never ending war and siphon the little devils out.  I've cut back on feeding which does seem to have made a slight dint in the population.  I have learned my lesson, never again will i neglect dipping my corals; i know the damage is already done to this tank but if i ever upgrade every single thing will be dipped and i will start over with new rock i think.  Hell i might even dip the rock i already have and kill off the stupidly huge bristle worms too.

My female clown has finally picked a host :) She's gone with the frogspawn and is actually being fairly gentle with it, she also lets the blue damsel hide under it which i find a little odd but their friendship is odd.

Mushroom cave, i'd love to get another colour mushroom to contrast the purple, maybe a red.

Bingley always photo bombs looking menacing

All of my animals seem to give me that face at least once a day.

Thinking about the swap i thought i'd do a comparison of one of the corals i bought last year.  I got a small hybrid hammer, this is it the day after the swap:

This is it today:

I haven't updated in ages so i figured it was time to update everyone on this tank just in time for this tank to be taken down.  I got a fantastic deal on a 40b and will be starting a new tank thread for that once i have finished building the stand (it's almost done!)

This little 20g tank has been amazing, i've learned so much since i started out not knowing what the hell i was doing in 2011.  My hope is that the upgrade will go smoothly; i'll be taking it nice and slow and running this tank along side the 40b and even after the new tank has cycled and i've slowly moved things over i will keep trusty 20 going in case i have any disasters.

For now enjoy some recent photos, i'm going to post a photo of the coral early on and one from today because i'm always amazed by the growth and changes corals go through.

Hybrid hammer:

Pink Birdsnest, Green Syplopora and fluffy millie:

Staghorn:

Devils hand:

My tank also has an incredibly 'healthy' population of brittle starfish :D

I've been collecting them up when i can and handing them out to the local people.  When the tank is finally torn down if i have any left i'll advertise them if anyone wants any.  They're surprisingly friendly, when i clean the tank i normally end up with some on my arms.

Thanks, i haven't seen that many before either.  I suspect that when i left my parents to look after my tank one weekend my mother went crazy with the feeding and the tank had a population boom.

Oh cool, i was wondering if you had used it for anything, if you get it fixed i'd love an update.

The tank looks great. You have done a great job keeping the corals, they all look colorful and healthy. Have you ever tried a Blue Velvet Nudibranch for your flatworms?

Check this out

Thanks!

I considered one and after watching it suck up flatworms in those videos i would get one just for that.  I wouldn't even need to watch tv it'd be so entertaining.

I do however have a plan of action.  When i move to the new tank i'm starting from scratch, new sand, new rocks.  I plan to chip the corals i have off the rock and in the case of the monti cap i'll break it off in pieces and keep a few pieces and sell the rest.  When i move the corals i will dip then and blast with a baster.  I figure if any of the sneaky buggers get by the dip and the blasting it will be minimal and i can dose the tank with flatworm exit to take care of any stragglers.  This will also hopefully solve the majano problem the tank has too.  I will treat and kill any that are near corals and burn the rest with fire.  Once the corals and fish and as many inverts (including starfish) as i can save are moved i plan to dose the 20g and all remaining rocks with flatworm exit.  There will be zoas and mushrooms left on the rocks, i will remove some and move them to the new tank and leave the rest.  If i can unflatworm the rocks they will go into the new sump with the zoas and mushrooms, if not i will attempt to remove as many of the polyps as i can and ditch the rock.

This is going to be a slow process, i will have both tanks running side by side and move everything over a few days, buckets of water to dip corals in and acclimate fish will no doubt take over my living room.  I imagine water will be everywhere.  But at least this time i can plan it, deal with issues and not go from a tub on the floor into a quickly prepped tank.

From now on i will dip and qt everything, i learned my lesson!

Tonight i cleaned the return pump and fragged some corals :D  First time i've really fragged anything intentionally so i'm pretty pleased with myself.  Ive' got 3 frags of pink birdsnest, 1 green stylopora, 1 green tipped staghorn and 1 and a baby heads of hybrid hammer.  (tank lights are off)

No I have 2 full spectrum LED bulbs about 8 inches above the water.  They're going nuts, I can't quite believe the growth on some of these corals.  And envy thing grows, lps, sps, leathers, zoas.  I don't run a skimmer and do 5 g a week water changes.  I do dose alk and ca everyday.

Thank you.  Well it looks like my tank stand will be ready next week to move into my house so i guess I better start a new tank thread for my upcoming 40b :D

I've also got a few frags for sale and will put them up after Christmas, I'll also be offering free brittle starfish and I've got some small limpets to give away too.

Love this coral, can't wait to give it more room to grow in the 40b, it's pressing up against the glass right now.
