Any suggestions???
« on: September 09, 2012, 21:31:23 »
I bought 3 30g breeders. I don't really have plans of yet for them. I was thinking of doing 1 fish only for nonreef safe fish. 1 for sea hourses & the 3rd ???? iuno. Any one have any ideas? I was thinking of running all 3 together. Would like to run @ least 2 together.

Also anyone really run a canister filter for any of the above ideas? I mean for any length of time. I want to go nuts with these. Thanks for any ideas.

You can run canister filters if you want, it just take ROUTINE maintenance to keep them from becoming nitrate factories.  You should be able to plumb all together with the exception of a sea horse tanks, as I believe they don't like the temps that a reef tank runs at.

I have been looking and I'm thinking pipe fish, seahorse, maybe some crazy inverts? I don't think I wanna run a canister filter. If I do seahorses then maybe some no photosynthetic corals in there. I'm going to start planning the layout of the tanks latter this coming week.

If you have other fish in the system and it's running all 3 in one you can not do sea horses or pipes they have very special requirements as in the water temp needs to be 70-74 and for non-photo corals they really need there own set up just like horses. I have 5 Kuda in my 75 and they get fed 3 times a day and weekly water changes as well as a large skimmer. There fun but they are work to keep them healthy. Best thing is to do your research and I would be more than happy to answer questions for you.

Upside down jelly fish the only problem is they require very strong lighting. They are able to withstand dont want to say dirty water but that is basically what it is. Very low flow and no place where they can get sucked up to a filter.

Sold! Thanks Bluewater, upside-down jellies is gonna be one idea. I really want an octopus. Any thoughts on the pygmy octopus? Sounds so cool. Anyone ever have one? Is 30g gonna be big enough?

octopus are malacoius, conniving, cunning beasts :P lol... I have never owned one, but want one. I have seen plenty of movies of thier handi work, you need to make that tank bullet proof.

Ok I have the stand set up & started cleaning things up. Anyone have any iseads on how to remove the blue paint on a tank?

Also is it possible to run a system on a dsb & may macro algea only? Maybe just usea filter sock as a filter? I have no idea on what to do for the sump yet.

Vinegar and a razorblade should so the paint(depends on what kind of paint though)

You can run a ATS(algae turf scrubber), allowing you to forego the skimmer

I have an ats on my 180 & love it. I am just looking to do something a lil different. I may just do another tho.

The paint is krylon spray paint. I just don't want to scratch it. the back is going to be the front.

If it is glass use a fresh razor blade... you can use mineral spirits or paint thinner, but you can't get it on the silicone... my advice would be to use paint thinner or acetone in the center of the tank to get a spot started, being careful not to let it run on the silicone... then liberally spray vinegar on anything left around the dge or silicone... let sit 5 mins, then liberally re apply vinegar and use razor blade to clean anything that may not wipe off.

Don't windex or similar clean it... Acetone and or vinegar only... if you use acetone do not get it on the silicone.

the thing to not scratching is keeping the glass wet... and dont dig or gouge at the paint with it, lay the blade on a 20deg angle (roughly)

I have been looking into frogfish & some others that say they feed on live feeder fish & live feeder shrimp. What is a good fish to use as a feeder fish or shrimp. Something that I can maybe breed myself.

Nope they will survive for a little while. Plenty long to be eaten.

Goldfish have very little nutritional value.   Sure live is cool, but you really need to get fish like this eating fortified frozen food.

Agreed, should never be their sole food, just every now and then for effect.

I would rather feed frozen. SOme of the things I have read say feed live. So just about everything can be trained to eat frozen at some point?
