Speak of the devil
« on: February 09, 2009, 13:38:55 »
After talking about salinity measuring tools and their inaccuracy in another thread I decided to re-calibrate my refractometer - which had not been done since July! I find that my salinity is actually at 1.023 *grumbles*

I am not too sure how fast to raise I. I remember on my old tank I took around a week or so to lower it from 1.031 but I am not sure how necessary it is to do it slowly.

You could go from 1.023 to 1.025 within a period of 24 hrs.  The goal would be to raise the specific gravity very slowly. Raising specific gravity too quickly would be very stressful on fish, pods, snails, crabs, invertebrates, corals, etc.

You may also want to check out various published articles on hyposalinity treatment, which involves lowering and raising specific gravity to treat fish infected with marine ich in QT.

Thanks for the reply. I think I am going to just replace evaporation water with 1.026 water. I believe that will be slow enough, I do not have a ton of evaporation right now.
