Good of Bad starfish?
« on: April 16, 2009, 23:58:22 »
I just got about 50 pounds of live rock and it is sitting in my 29gal QT for the next several weeks.
I have already seen what looks to be 10 to 20 little starfish moving on the tank.
They are more similar in body shape to a sand sifter or chocolate than a brittle star.  However most are only a couple of centimeters and they seem to be missing parts of their legs.

I need to know if these are scavengers and are good for my display tank or are they bad and are going to destroy my corals.

I will try to post pictures tommorrow.
Thanks and God Bless,
John

If it looks like these, they are fine.

that's the one I have as well and doesn't seem like he's done any damage to my stuff either.

 ;D That's them  :D
I am rather relieved!
I was worried not only did I have to worry about aptasia in my new rock but also coral eating starfish.

Any idea what they will eat?  Are they some type of scavenger (like sandsifter or brittle) or more like a linkia?
Thanks and God Bless,
John

I am concerned now.
AGGGHH.
I have mainly mushrooms and some LPS but I also recently added a couple frags of montipora and what I think is a Seriatopora guttatus (birds nest)

I am now concerned.

Do I need to get rid of them?
What can I do to rid myself (if need be) of these stars.
Thanks and God Bless,
John

Hey,

Those are starfish that came from the liverock from my tank I assume?

If that is the case, I simply do not believe that they eat SPS. I've had hordes of them in my tank for years and I've never seen them do anything but crawl on the liverock and the glass, mostly at night.

If they were sps eating starfish it is likely you would see them on your birdsnest. So if they are just on your live rock and glass then don't fret.

Sorry,
I may have stated it wrong.  The stars were on rock that I got last night and they are in a 29 gallon QT tank.  The corals are all in my main display tank.

Hdyoung thanks for the reply (just trying to cover all the basis)
Thanks and God Bless,
John
