What crabs do you use in your display tank?
« on: June 03, 2009, 21:52:32 »
I am going to stock my tank of crabs and snails.  Do you guys (and ladies) use red legs or blue legs or neither.  Just curious to what people have found to be the best.

Blue legs here to. They don't seem to get as big as the others.

Started with blue legged, red legged, and the zebra striped legged ones.  The blue legs killed everything else over time...so I have blue legs!

Does anybody have problems with the blue legs attacking(killing) the snails?

I've a lot of crabs over the years so I'm not even sure what all I have in there now, but, something killed almost all of my snails!!!  When these crabs are gone I'm not adding any more...

I've just made sure I had extra shells in the tank. I don't think I've lost and snails to crabs yet.

I have always had an issue with the blue legs killing my snails as well so I buy only red legs even if they are more expensive. every now and again, I'll get a little blue leg that will slip up in my bunch.

My bluelegs have been the least problem as far as killing my snails. The redlegs have been the worst for me, they grow much bigger than the bluelegs as well. The scarlet hermit crabs are good additions, get good sized, and I haven't seen them bother any snails in my tank.

Hermit crabs usually kill the snails for their shells...even if there are plenty of other available shells to use.  Think about it from the crab's perspective...just because *you* think that empty snail shell is pretty...doesn't mean Mr. Hermit Crab does.  To him, it's an ugly house.

There have been a few studies that actually showed that hermit crabs have preference to "prettier" houses.  They are actually picky.  (Might be a case of "the grass is greener on the other side" too though.)

I got tired of the crabs eating my snails, so no crabs.  Just a mixture of snails.  I also like to keep a variety of urchins as a clean up crew.

If I could EVER find one, I would go with an Urchin Crab.
I don't know how large they are though.
- the baddest crab of all time for sure!
