29 gallon sump
« on: February 03, 2010, 10:54:26 »
hey guys does $26 sound about right to have three 1/4" pieces of glass cut they will all be 12" (wide) x 10" (tall).  I have some acrylic but I don't want to do the project over so I'm thinking I may be better off just using glass (I've heard plexi will bow.  Also whats everyones thought on the GE 1 silicone is it safe or not I know there I have seen many discussions about it recently on other boards?

If the $26 includes the glass, I think thats on par with most places.  If its just for the cuts i would call around someone would sure be able to beat that price.

The quote was from Xenia Glass, I considered getting the glass at lowes but all they carry is picture frame glass (1/8").  I've heard it will work but you have to be real careful about bumping it and if going to do it, I better do it right.  It's too bad lowes doesn't carry thicker than 1/8" because they have the 10"x12" for two dollars and some change a piece.  The quote I got from Xenia Glass was for three pieces all measuring 10"x12" but a member suggested I may want to make the middle divider go up the tank further if that makes any sense.  That way my skimmer doesn't shoot over the first bubble trap.  So back to the silicone should I just use the GE silicone from Lowes or order the silicone made for aquariums?  The aquarium silicone says it takes 72 hours to dry I would rather wait 24 hours.

I use GE silicone II. I do believe Slandis has been to glass cages warehouse and said if you walk around back you will see empty cases of GE silicone II so I would guess its good enough to do sumps if they are building tanks with it

Geez now I have to redo my sump thanks Justin...J/K   ;D    So how long did you guys let it dry?  I'm just paranoid to leave the sump out for more than a day I can see it now I will have to look every couple of minutes to make sure the plumbing isn't leaking into my stand.

Ok I feel silly I think I've been in the hobby for four years now but I have never had any dividers in my sump.  Here is a picture of the planned sump (don't laugh)   Ok from left to right: the first thing will be my skimmer which is recommend to run in 8-10" of water so my first glass baffle will be 10" tall (if i need to I will just raise the skimmer, the second baffle will be an inch of the bottom of the sump and extend to the rim of the sump and the third will be 10" tall as well.  Will this work for a bubble trap and hold my water level where I want it?  The return line will come into the sump in the skimmer area.  The return pump will be on the opposite end.  I don't plan on putting sand or macro in the sump I'm going to continue using GFO.  I figure on my 29 gallon sump the return pump area should hold about 7 gallons of water.
