Overfeeding?
« on: November 13, 2009, 19:11:08 »
So how much does everyone feed? I've never seen anyone else feed their tank so... I have always had diatoms and stuff, I suspect overfeeding probably the cause.

I have a yellow tank, pseudochromis, 2 chromis, pair clowns, mandrin

I feed small pinch of spetrum pellets when I get home from work (comsumed instantly)
and at night a half cube of mysis(maybe a full cube if I'm too lazy to cut it in half)

I know Brian told me he only feeds every 2-3 days. Am I crazily overfeeding??

I feed Rods Reef Origional every 3 days. I also dont have a lot of faith in my skimmer, so I try to feed light. On a side note, I know a guy who feeds once a week, and has beautiful corals, however he has 1 little wrasse in a 265 tank, but lets the corals go "natural".

I have 2 clowns and a watchman goby and i feed them about one frozen cube every three days.  They are not starving though, when I would feed every day the goby would never sift the sand.

I used to diy my food.  Haven't done that in a long time.  I need to do it again!  I forget what all I put in mine now.  I like the egg crate idea!  :)

cyber
I dont think that you are overfeeding.  I feed daily in my 180 with 8 fish at least the amount equilivant to several cubes. My fish eat every bit of it.   I had the diatoms and such,  and had to clean my glass several times a week.  I set up a larger skimmer and was amazed at the difference.  Now I dont clean the glass between my weekly water changes and even then It isnt bad at all.  I dont know what you have in the way of a skimmer but you might want to take a look in that direction.

I agree IMO tangs should be feed at least once a day and multiple times would be better, they are grazers and need to eat constantly to be healthy. I always look at tangs as being the cows of the sea, in the wild most species of tang would graze all day long on algae, so feeding small amounts multiple times a day would be best. As long as the food is being consumed by the fish and is not falling to the bottom or not being consumed by other animals I think your fine.

I used to never feed, now I am the exact opposite.  I feed usually at least twice a day...for as long as my fish keep eating.  But, I'm also trying to break my tank in and my angel eats pretty much constantly.

I just pour a little bit of my DIY food in...sometimes with some pellets in....really slow.  As the fish keep eating, I keep adding more.  Once they lose interest, then I stop.
