The Cube - 240 4x4x2
« on: June 29, 2007, 15:02:40 »
Thought I would create a new thread in here that I can update.

Day I brought it home. Isn't it pretty..

After about 4 months of painting, drilling, flooring the room and the tank we finally bring it in...

June 8 - It's time for rock...

First freshwater test....Didn't go so well.

Moved one of the closed loop pumps to under the tank and removed the other one.  I also have the skeleton of the light hood up with the mover installed. Final freshwater test is tomorrow. If all goes well, Sunday I will clean it out and start putting in RODI.

Where did you get your rock from?  What kind is it?  Looks as if it has some nice texture to it and should be real nice once it gets some growth going on it.  I will be doing an upgrade from a 120 to a 180 in about a month and would like to chuck my 15 years old live rock that has to be loaded with phos. causing some algae problem covering the surface of the rock.  So I will be needing to get some rock for the tank.

The rock was purchased from us (JustCoral.com) I ordered 2 pallets totaling 2,200 pounds that arrived in early June.  It went fast I have only 4 rocks left and a lot of rubble :).  I should have another pallet late July early August.

As Scott said it came from him. It is some of the nicest rock I have seen and buying it dry you definitely get your money's worth.

The final FW test was complete tonight. I plan to clean the sump tomorrow and start filling with RODI on Monday. I still need sand and to wire up the lighting, but I hope to start moving my current tank over around the last week of July.    ;D

Is that laminate flooring or real hard wood floor? I was concerned about the weight issue on my 240 so we put the tank on the concrete and laid the laminate around the tank.

Just hit the 12 hour mark of filling and I'm at about 40 gallons - 4 inches in the display. Hopefully by Sunday I'll actually be turning the pumps on and starting to mix in the salt. Probably have shots of the sump area this weekend too.   ;D

Thats a nice tank, sure wish i could get one like that, but anyways what are you planning on putting in there. Is it going to be all SPS or will it be a  softy tank.

Just curious because i would love to trade some frags with you, in the future if thats cool with you.

10" if water..WOOHOOO

I will start it with  SPS/LPS from my current tank. I'm starting with mostly frags so I won't have anything to trade for a while, but am all about trading when the time comes.

I'll shoot a pic of my current tank when the lights come on.

Monday morning 10AM and water is just now flowing over the overflow. Should be able to turn the pumps on tonight and start mixing saltwater.  Day later than I thought but still okay.

I changed the DI right before I started the fill so I should be good for a little while. Should have the pumps running before bed tonight.

Finally fired the pumps up and threw in some salt this morning before I left for work.  Hopefully everything will be okay when I get home this evening.  You know when the best time to start a new tank (with 310 gallons of water)?..... Two days before you leave for vacation for two weeks...

I'll let the tank run while on vacation and probably a week or two when I return then start moving over my current tank.  If my wife ever finds the camera I'll snap some more pics.

Perfect timing!  I almost made a few tweaks/changes to my tank before I went on vacation but stopped myself.  I remembered the golden rule.

Every bit of salt I have is in the tank and I'm only at 1.016 looks like I'll be making a trip to Jack or Petsmart in the morning.   Wife still can't find the camera so no new pics. :(

Everything in the old tank is alive and well. and there were no major issues with the new tank while I was away. Thanks to baggerhog for checking on things during the week.

The tank has one of the lights wired up and I fired it last night. 400W radium on PFO HQI ballast. I really like the color.  I'd show it to you, but the wife (actually probably me) lost our digital camera so I have to wait until Andy can come over and shoot some pics for me.  I'll have the salinity in check and sand in the tank this week too. Since there is really no rush on the tank, I'm going to go ahead and let it run for a few more weeks before I move everything over.

Despite my wife's best effort to lose our camera so she could get one of those wicked expensive digital SLRs, I found the camera. So here are a couple more recent shots including a couple of the 1st corals to be moved into the tank. Only one ballast is wired and you can't really see it but the light mover is on and in operation.  Eventually there will be some VHOs or T5s up as well to help with the dawn to dusk. Once everything is moved over I will work on getting the rest of the stand and hood skinned out.

Sorry for the quality of pics but other than zoom and push the button there isn't much else I know about the camera.

Joe,

With that blue light white balance will be your friend :)

looking good.  It is amazing how small an acro colony can look when it has that much room to grow.

Scott - I'll look for the white balance on the camera, maybe actually look at the manual.

Larrynews - I bought it used from someone in the ATL, but it originally came from glasscages.com.  My other tanks are all from them and I couldn't be happier.

Sooo anyone interested in buying a 4x4x2 cube??? Not for sure, but a real estate deal has come up that is just to good to pass up and I will have to sell this tank to show my house. And there won't be a proper place for it in the new place.  So if anyone is interested I'll make you a sweet deal on the tank and stand :)

:) It's still up in the air. I just spend the last 3 hours crawling around in the crawl space and the work may be more than I want to take on right now. I still need to have a sit down with the seller, but I'm thinking the tank might be finished after all.

Here are some coral pics. Stand is finished but I still have not finished the hood. It will probably get done during August when things slow down a little.

First. If you're going to have a kid, make sure you keep your tank. It is the best babysitter on earth.

Very nice ORA Pearlberry!  Your ORA Roscoe looks like an ORA Chips to me, but I may be wrong. I have both corals in my system and they look distinctively different. The Chips Acropora" has very long greenish yellow polyps lending the coral a fuzzy appearance. The growth tips of the coral are bright purple."

Very nice Joe!  I think I may have some LE's up for trading eventually.   ;)

I agree with Tim.  I have the ORA Roscoe's from JC...different look to it.  I got some pictures of it tonight...I'll try to get them posted soon...maybe after I finish the newsletter.

Hey. I got it from SPSstoner from Cleveland. He had a tank crash about 2 months after I got it and lost everything.

Have you heard from SPStoner since the crash?  He sent me a couple of PM's right after...but haven't heard from him since.

I'll put you on the list. It'll probably be ready to frag in 2014. We had PMed back and forthe a few times as I have several of his corals but then he sort of drifted away. He had a very nice system. Hopefully he will be back.
