Title: Thoughts on bare bottom?
Post by: SaltwaterTaffy on February 20, 2019, 21:04:01
Starting a 48x16. 1ft tall. 45gal. Considering barebottom. Thinking my mp10 will blow sand everywhere. Pros and cons?

Pros for me would be no blowing around of the sand, no detritus trap and not grow an ugly bed of cyano if it should break out.  Cons would be there will be some fish and invertebrates you wont be able to keep and the biggest for most of us is just the looks of no sand.  Years ago many people used deep sand beds for nitrate removal but not so much anymore.

Personally just don't like the look of a bare bottom.

Once you get the tank going the corals and coralline algae will cover the bottom and you won’t miss the gravel and having to clean it.

Seems to me when I use dry rock it takes forever to get a stable tank with no sand.  Long term, I love the ease of maintenance of no sand in a mature tank.  I’d vote for one of each!
