Clams
« on: September 05, 2006, 01:52:18 »
I am looking for more resorces about Clams. I am torn between a sps tank or a clam tank. My wife would like me to build a clam tank instead of the sps. I havent made up my mind yet. I have 3 clams now but with a 200g tank i could have a lot more. But i would like to know more about them before i decide what i am going to make it.

Why don't you have a mixed SPS and clam tank?  Depending on the clams you have, they would both require the same lighting.

I am thinking of what ever i decide to do make it a specific tank. I have read alittle about some clams require more idione, i know some people dont even use idione for sps. I have about a month or two before we start seting up the new tank. hopefully i will decide by then

I would think clams would be a little easier to maintain then SPS.

they are. thats another reason i dont want to mix the two. I feed my tank now with various things that sps may not like. micro vert, marine snow, things like that

As long as you have a good skimming/cleaning system in place you would be fine.  I have both a clam and SPS in my reef tank with no problems.  There are several people that have both.  The bottom line is what is it that you want. Then go with that.  :)

no, the calcium uptake for a lot of clams is hard to keep up with.

either way one thing you can be sure of is its gonna be a lot of money!!!

Just wait for all those clams to start spawning...that's a good way to lose a system!

your clams shouldnt spawn in captivity unless something is going very well for a long time or bad for the individual clam.

3inch plus clams dont need fed, at least thats what ive always heard and done.  I do know that the calcium would be really hard to keep up with especially with a couple of derasas and gigas.  that would be really hard to keep up with

clams like most of that very well. in fact phyto is great for them.

cal reacor is a must if your going to have a bunch of clams in a small system. by small i am talking about less than 500gal.
