Does distilled water have phosphate? I feed lightly and run a ton of GFO but it seems to do nothing.

No phosphates in distiller water. Is your system fairly new or the rock purchased from someone that had not done good maintenance? Or any where else the nutrients could be coming from? If it is dinoflagellates there are treatments. It is h202. Hydrogen Perxoide. Google dinoflagellates in reef tank to see if that is what you have. If you do google dinoflagellates h202

Yes I do. Dinoflagellates are extreme irritants to corals. They can also make you pretty sick. You can find in tank dosing instructions here. http://www.reef2reef.com/forums/reef-discussion/52084-dinoflagellates-my-experience-h2o2-reefing-tool.html

Brian, I have something happening in my tank right now as well.  I think red slime, but not all of it looks like that.  Some actually looks like j80's tank.  How do you tell the difference?  Do you know if H202 works for red slime as well?

Micki here are some pictures of Dinoflaggellets

Go for this Micki, it will due the trick if you have red slime. If you use it follow instructions very carefully and you won't have any issues. http://premiumaquatics.com/store/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=PA&Product_Code=CHEMI-CLEAN&Category_Code=

Are the bubbles from the algae itself or does it just pick it up from the tank?

It makes the bubbles as apposed to other algae's that traps the bubbles already in the tank.

Mine looks just like the second picture. I also got rid of the zoa's that were closed after i dipped them in H202 and they still did nothing. I have a micro bubble problem that I never had before and it's from the bubbles getting chopped up by the powerheads. It makes sense now because I saw the bubbles on the algae but could not figure out where they were coming from.

Brian, great link to Reefcleaners!  I'm pretty sure I have red slime, but mine does have TONS of bubbles in it.  I think I have some red slime remover left over from a few years ago.  I'll give that a try (in my spare time).  Thanks again and good luck j80!

Micki be sure to leave your protein skimmer running when using chemiclean, just turn it down so it can't skim the cleaner out. It is really important to have the water well oxygenated.

I am on day 3 of H202 dosing the only thing that's happened was today everything was covered with dark brown dust ( I worked 16 hours yesterday so i'm not sure if it was there last night ) but when i blew it off the rock looks pretty good. I just read that peroxide has a open bottle shelf life of 30-45 days so i will get a new bottle and keep dosing.

It is hard to tell from the pic but that looks more like diatoms. Does it look like the picture above with snotty mucus with bubbles or more like your picture brown algae? If it is truly just algae the H202 won't do much for you at safe tank dosing concentrations.

The sand looks more like diatoms and I have had it for 10 months and can't get rid of it. The rocks look like your second picture with bubbles in it. How do you get rid of diatoms after 10 months?

That does seem odd that you are still having diatoms on the sand like that. Would you consider your sand fine, medium or coarse? Fine sand tends to have this issue more becasue it can't breath. We need to get a good water test. Any chance you can bring to my work one day next week a water sample. I work behind the dayton mall. PM me if you can and we will coordinate a time. We can do a full panel on all the Ohio Reef digital meters and get an idea of where the issue might be or not be.

I am on day 4 of H202 dosing and it looks like it's getting worse, all my soft corals are closed and the whole tank is covered in brown dust. I might try one more day but I don't think it is doing anything.
