What to try next
« on: May 17, 2010, 16:25:57 »
Ok ... I have been running my "Dirty" :) LPS tanks for a little while now and am happy with the results I have been achieving. I few months ago I picked up different colors of Monti and they have taken off and show good growth ( except for a green who refuses to do much  ??? ). Good enough that I have even fragged out a red and given them away. Got to spread the love right ?

Ok ... so to the point. I would like to get some opinions on what SPS to try next to round out my ecosystems. They would have to be hardy and able to thrive in my dirtier  ;D conditions. and please try to suggest something that is attainable and wont break me $$$

also if something is mentioned and you have a frag of it, I would love to know so I could work out some kind of deal.

Thanks everyone
SEE YA AT THE SWAP !!

Kenn

I believe that I have read that caps come from a part of the reef that is probably the dirtiest part of the reef.  a milli might be the next to try and see how well they do in your tank.  I have noticed the green milli that i have grew ok when my tank was "dirty" but didnt have the same polyp extension as my tank cleaned up.   Myself and some others have some nice frags on fragswapper for mostly $10 that would be a good to try.  Just take a look and pick out a couple to try.

Most Acroporas like it cleaner,  plus some like the brigher lights.    Maybe you should just get some Montipora Digitata.

The Green Monti's seem to grow much slower then the red.
Here is a list of excellent small polyp stony corals to start with. They are all very tolerant to less them optimal conditions and disease/pest resistant.

All Thin or Thick Branch Pink Birds Nest. Seriatopora/Hystrix
All types of Pavona
Horn Coral or Encrusting (Hydnophora)
Cats Paw (Stylophora)
Cauliflower Coral (Pocillopora)

They are the green star polyps of a SPS keepers tank and grow so well and hardy that frags go for 5$-10$ and small colony's 15$. However they need extremely intense lighting or low kelvin bulbs to keep their intense pink color. They will grow fine under high kelvin, lower light but will be brown.

You would have to check on a Par meter since there are so many factors at play, with that said guessing 300 or greater PAR (minimum) to keep them pink. Wall Tank do you know what PAR your birdsnest is at?

My Pink Birdsnest frags grow VERY fast under the 400W 20K halide (PAR is about 380 where it is at), but look alot more Pink under the 150W 10K bulb in the other side of the frag tank. Not sure of the PAR under the 150w.

That makes me feel a little better :) ... I'm not ready to make the leap to anything bigger than 150 watt MH on my smaller tanks ... although I am still trying to figure out a way to squeeze in actinic strip over the 26g. The 150w sunpod has a semi-large foot print to deal with.

Went to a members home today to take advantage of an offer to calibrate my refractometer ( I have been using RO to zero mine out ... I know  :o ) and to pick up a few frags.

Well to my surprise my refractometer  was already in good shape  ::)

Now... take a look at what I got  ;D

A reverse poker star monti and a pink Birds nest

Thanks so much Lazylivin'  YOU DA MAN  :notworthy

I have plenty they are just much smaller then what Ken got. More this size and some 1/2 again. However they grow quick, takes a couple of months to get the size that Ken got.

If you would like one request it through Fragswapper.  :drink By doing so you get added to the listing otherwise I would not remember.
